I really, really wanted to be all about this, but this song doesn't get good till at least half-way through. Why do people have to pretend that "mellowing out" is a sign of maturity?

I guess the same reason they pretend "staying heavy" is a sign of remaining true to your artistic vision.

"Oh we're more grown up now so instead of being interesting we're gonna give some stuff that sound a lot like board up the house a post-rock makeover with lazy vocals because that exact formula seemed to work really well for Daughters."

Board up the house was made 14 years ago, dude. They have a different singer now. If I was writing the same exact kinds of songs today that I was a decade ago, I don't think I would want to do it anymore.

I mean most metal albums are basically the same song just chopped up into 10 tracks, in slightly different keys. Sometimes, not even that. Metal fans don't want range or evolution or change or anything

I'm pretty sure if somebody dropped a Led Zep style album that goes all the way from clean vocals accompanied just by a guitar and mandolin, to a blues song, to heavy metal all on a single LP people would hate it

Almost like it's a totally different band. Whatever, I'll still give the full album a spin but my expectations are well-managed.

Depends on if it sounds like a cohesive musical idea throughout or just some knobs with too much time on their hands. Lots of "prog" stuff goes all over the place, but it works because of how it's framed. But you're right, if a band puts out an album with 10 songs that sound like 10 different bands, their gonna have a hard time finding an audience. Might even be 10 great songs, but its gonna play like a bad night at the bar on the jukebox all together.

I'm just leery of bands disappearing for a decade or longer then coming back with basically a whole new lineup and NOT thinking they're just using the old name because it carries some clout and it's easier than starting a new project.

this just kinda sounds like their old material sans the screaming? the song's kinda boring, but this band has always been mid.

2/3 of the og band is still present. i wouldn't exactly call that a "whole new lineup."

2/3 of the 4 people in the band, so half the people in this band were in Genghis Tron. It does sound like old stuff about half-way through, so much so that it kinda sounds like BUtH part II.

Going from programmed drums to material written with an actual drummer is a pretty dramatic difference for this band. Genghis Tron always had more realistic programmed drums than a band like Cloacal Kiss though.

true. my remark was more addressing the people in this thread who are claiming there's been some dramatic shift in sound and personnel.

it's the same band, without the singer and with the addition of nick yacyshyn. the new singer sounds exactly the same as the old guy.

This track's alright but I would have been way more excited for new Cloacal Kiss or Sawtooth material

I get what everyone is saying. I’m a huge GT fan, but this doesn’t have the same edge. But it’s only one song. Ready to hear more.
