It took me a while to appreciate this band....I still like their older stuff a little better than new stuff.

I appreciate that they are trying new things, but man, M's voice is rough, lol -- it sounds especially strange on the last few tracks that are more "pretty" and light. The album is very eclectic, but has a lack of great riffs IMO. Still lots of cool lead guitar parts though.

I'm about halfway through the album now. As a disclaimer, I'm not an A7x fan outside of some songs I grew up with because these guys were literally inescapable from my generation. They were the only metal band that was "cool" to listen to while I was in HS.

With that said, does M Shadow smoke? His voice always sounded like that of a smoker, but his vocals here sound like a dude who's been smoking for so many years and it's now catching up to him. Either that or they're just completely shot.

I don't mind the weird experimental stuff, actually quite enjoy it, but man where are the riffs? It's nothing but electronic stuff and lead guitars.

This has some good background on the album. Apparently M Shadows injured his voice pretty badly and had to have a lot of coaching the get it back up to speed. https://rocksound.tv/features/avenged-sevenfold-life-is-but-a-dream-the-album-story

It does sound different than before, I quite like it though. I like the grit and strain you can hear sometimes. I'm loving the album though so am very biased.

Dudes getting old.

Also I'm surprised he didn't convince them to sell this album as an NFT lol
So I watched an interview with him recently. He said he deliberately asked to not sound like M Shadows on older albums. Trying very hard to change style, using different styles, vocal effects etc. I think it's nothing to do with age. In fact, I believe his voice is better and more versatile than ever.

Definitely a good read, thanks of the info. So he did do some major damage.

I never liked A7X but this is a great album with some stunning guitar playing.
