So after blowing my back out carrying my 42kg 6505 2x12 combo around, I decided it was time for a few modifications. So my granddad and I went to work on making the amp into a head + 2x12 cab. I am really really pleased with how it came out!
    Now for the pics.

A few pics of the mods in progress:

Note the paper like stuff we found on the left speaker: :squint:

And this is how it came out!

Note the awesome brass binding that Pop put on it:

And we added a jack to the speaker cab:

So pleased with the way it came out, saves me and my back a lot of trouble!

That was the best thing I did for mine. That one handle on top is a joke.
You should look into a 4x12 now. Just make sure it's 16 ohms.
I'm actually thinking about repeating the process on a Spider Valve combo- haha. It's also 2 6L6s and sounds much better through a decent cab.

That looks great and is a perfect idea for a cheap rig for home.

Did you cut the head shell off in one piece then build a completly new cab or did you just repair the cab?

the head came off as one piece, then we attached a new piece of board to the top of the cab, then re tolex'd the lot :)

That's how I did my 51. It was only 2 cuts on the ends, if I remember right.

We had to do a bit of stuffing around with the bits of wood that the speaker baffle and back plate attached to, but over all it was a fairly simple operation

Would be cool if you could score a couple of 8ohm V30s. Or even one to run next to the Sheffield.
I actually like Sheffs, but I'm hearing that the V30s are a common swap for the combos.

looks amazing! very professional outcome! i can only hope that mine will look similar. the guy i took it to is a pro, so im optimistic. hope you enjoy rocking that thing! try it out on some 4x12 cabs! if im not mistaken its 16 ohms for the reg speaker output and 8 ohm on the external output.

    CONGRATS!
