Picked this up in a trade recently. Great amp, definitely more my speed than the 4010 that I had previously. Very similar but 100-watts, 2-ish channels, built in reverb and the controversial clipping diode, which I appreciate for the added gain sooner.

Inside is mostly stock. Recently was recapped with Fisher capacitors. It's got 4 JJ EL-34s, a set of JJ ECC-83s, a Jan Philips 12AX7 and a Tung Sol 12AU7. It's been around the block but it's definitely an amp meant to be PLAYED.

I jammed with it for a while today, master volume around 11 and the gain dimed. Definitely more distortion on tap, most of which kicks in around 3/4 up the knob.

    Love it.

Play it right up to the point of familiarity breeding contempt and send it to Hermansson for a 50 gain stage mod.

Nice find! I've heard people praising the 2203 but to me that seems to need to be ear splitting loud to sound good and that they didn't actually have that much gain on tap. So this might actually be plus if clipping diode gives it a bit more kick before getting too loud!
I also remember people speaking badly of the JCM900's due to the clipping diode and that it's not true tube and blah blah blah!

Yeah I dunno about people sometimes  It's a 2203 with more stuff. You can snip or jumper one component and its the same amp, with a second channel, reverb and a DI. The 2203 is basically the rawer version of the circuit I guess but a lot of guys that mod like having the DI or the reverb to mod into additional gain stages etc.

I can see being sour back in the 80s when this was the beginning of adding SS components to get more gain, but it's completely reversible. You could still turn it into a Jose with $5 in Radio Shack parts.

Nowadays the JCM900 had a bit of a resurgence. People fucking LOOOVE the Mark III and SL-X. And are even turning around on the Dual Reverb (the one everyone hated).

Happens every 20 years or so. I had an SLX in my watch list for $350 before the market decided they weren't a poser Marshall anymore.

Also sucks if you're like me and wanted to get a 6505/5150 for cheap. Peavey shit the bed and now they're rising in price.

I was actually quite interested on the SL-X but prices have been climbing lately. Suddenly I see JCM900 upwards of £500 while previously they would be unsold for quite a bit of time for lower than that.

I blame Johan Segeborn and Leon Todd.
Every time people make those "X isnt as bad as they say it is!" or "Is X the best kept secret!" or "X is my secret weapon", prices go up.

Beautiful amp and loud af. Has a crap ton of lows and highs but with an EQ or a tubescreamer in fron it's just heaven.

800's and 5150s have been going up in price since the mid 2000's. Same with vintage traynor amps (at least in canada). We'll see if they dip back down or not .

Need to finish up Mom so you can put the guitar and the 800 through its paces. Don't forget to use a TS like Lynch would.
