I truly appreciate their songwriting and overall musicality during the load-era. They were grown ups then and wrote music that supported that.

But now, at this age, any effort to sound like they're still in their 20s is not convincing at all.

Robert Plant doesn't pretend to still sound like Zeppelin. He has moved beyond that and his recent material is stellar. But I admit, it's not for the masses.

Wow... I have a lot of nasty things to say about this, but I'll just say that I'm really happy to see that James Hetfield looks healthy and in shape, and that they're still active and making music, even if I don't like it AT ALL.

Not a bad track (despite the mega-critics) but there is no reason that needed to be 8 minutes long.

I liked the pace of it a lot, but the second half did seem a little repetitive. I feel like they could have thrown some extra stank on the later parts that come back to add a sense of variance over the entire piece. They're never really been a band to do that, though.

Not doing anything for me on first listen. I’ll have to give it another shot and see if it grows on me.
Gave it another listen and it was better this time, but too long. If you’re doing something that long, it needs more variation to keep it interesting.

Vocals sound good, guitar tone is not really what I would want Metallica to sound like. Songs are decent, nothing I would buy for sure. They still produced a few good songs in the 90`s, but after Jason left there`s not much inspiration to really create a record that stands the test of time. To me that`s allright. In the first 10-15 years of their carreer they made enough outstanding music to have earned the right to make shitty or mediocre records till the day they die. The fact that they`re still making new music is respectabe to say the least!

It's the same thing with Ozzy really. I'm the biggest Ozzy fan I know, but I hate everything he's made after ozzmosis. I still saw him live and he still played all the classics live and put onnan incredible performance... But his new records all fell flat. Metallica albums are like that for me. I still wouldn't pass up a chance to see them live

-Off topic- I disagree on the last Ozzy, very good album for a while ! :)

Guess that it will always be the problem in music/metal.
You do the same stuff, always, it's boring.
You try new stuff, it's wrong, not what people expect, go back to what you know best
You do that and go back to your roots, you're too old now....

Like Maiden with X factor, Slayer with Diabolus in Musica, Megadeth with Risk, Kreator with Endorama, Metallica with Load etc.... you get the idea

So what should they do ?
I'd be curious to hear an all unplugged/country by hetfield, but not under metallice obviously, I'm surprised he hasn't done it already...

An effort would be nice.

I think people are so quick to dissect newer material because everyone is desperately looking for something decent in the song. Unfortunately its been pretty surface level for over 30 years now so this situation is reminiscent of a pack of vultures flying round a carcass that passed a long time ago. People have chose to settle for mediocre when it comes to Metallica.

With regards to any age related qualms people might have, i give you Megadeth.

1000% agreed. Kiko and Dirk have turbo charged that band after Dystopia and not TSTDaTD

It pains me to say this but I feel like Metallica should just stop writing new material. None of it is really good and it is just kind of sad to listen to their new songs when you compare it to how amazing their stuff from the 20th century (wow to say that out loud) was.

By the time I got my first guitar, Metallica had already recorded everything I really needed from them. The rest is gravy. I’ve never met anyone in the band, but musically they’re like old friends to me at this point. I’m always happy to pick up their new record and hear what they’re up to. I just go in with an open mind and a glass-half-full mindset.

No really, could the riffs and tone be any more dull/boring? I get a kick watching youtube reactors falling out of their chair with how amazed they are with every new measure. I assume their reactions are fake to earn click/subscriber income.

Age is not an excuse for horrible guitar tone. And age is not an excuse for your riffs to be nothing more than 4x4 power cord measures with a straight drum beat. You don't have to play fast to still play interesting. Most guitarrists/composers adapt with age to slow down, but put in more emotion and flavor to their music.

Irn maiden's newest albums sound like they're all old as heck, and their guitar tone is horrible too, but they the songwriting is still interesting and the arrangements more complex. They sound like their playing to the strengths of their age.

But seriously, metallica gets instant grammy for putting out a pile of crap just because they were once the definition of heavy metal, and ride through black will probably forever be the greatest heavy metal albums of all time. But there's so much better stuff coming out. A few of my 2022/21 picks, Avantasia: Moonflower, Battle Beast: Circus of Doom, Seventh Wonder: Testament, Stratovarius: Survive, Helloween: Helloween, Labyrinth: Welcome to the absurd circus, Majustice: Ancestral Recall,

Seriously, Helloween is full of a bunch of old guys, and that reunion album is absolutely amazing. Metallica isn't even in the same league anymore.

I'd still love to see them live again, the Power Trip festival is probably the last chance to see something like this I'm guessing. It's only a few hours drive from me too. The lineup is Guns N Roses, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Ozzy reincarnated, Tool and Metallica. 3 days of insane Metal. Probably one of the greatest shows ever. But I'm thinking buy gear instead. lol.
