Hello it is me, the elusive lefty SSO veteran. The SSO discord usually serves my purposes but those guys dont seem to know much about bass pickups. LOOKING AT YOU STEVE!

    First here is the bass

Its my tired and true Rondo fretless I got in 2015. I'm looking to give it a nice upgrade as my bass playing has gotten more serious over the years.

I think I want an EMG set. Going all active. The bass has a battery cavity already so that makes things easier.

So I could stay with 4 knobs and get this

Or add a knob and get this

And as for the pickups themselves I'm kind of clueless. I like the sound of a J style in the neck and I really really dig the MM style pickup in one of my other basses in the bridge.

I'm thinking maybe this in the neck

    And this in the bridge

Your pic link is not working, but I know what a Rondo bass generally is like.

Regarding the preamps, I guess the main thing you need to decide is if having a semi-parametric mid stack on the bass is worth the extra expense and the hassle of drilling a hole. Since it’s a Rondo bass it’s not a big deal to make an irreversible mod. But do you really need that control onboard, or can you get good enough (or potentially even better) results from your amp’s controls or DAW plugins? There’s no right or wrong answer but think about what situations you’ll be playing in and how often you need to adjust EQ settings quickly.

It looks like you linked to the same pickup twice. Were you thinking of a 40CS/DC combination? EMG pickups are not my personal favorite but they’re tried and true, can sit well in a mix, and will almost certainly be an improvement over stock Rondo pickups. If you like what you’re hearing from them in clips of basses with similar pickup placement you should be good to go.

If I may ask what specifically makes you lean toward EMG?

You know what? The DC bridge/CS neck combo can sound killer on a fretless.

Doesn't sound a whole lot like a MM/J combo to me but I like it!

just make sure you get left-handed EMGs so your tone isn't backwards
