Well I ended up just pulling the trigger on a used Am Pro II.
In the end the price difference was about $500 more than a new player. not chump change, but I liked the neck better, has all the features I wanted, and just said “buy me” more than the other guitars.

If you're in the mindset that the am pro ii is your end game, just get the am pro ii. There's not much point in beating around the bush and you'll probably spend more in upgrades on the performer to get it to the same level as the am pro than of you were to just pay the difference for the am pro.
