String physics and experimentation were used to develop a short fatter section near the saddle, this seems to reduce inharmonicity when playing on higher frets.

The research paper contains a lot of useful string physics information in one place, i recommend anyone read part 1 which is not technical. Part 2 usefully contains the equations for inharmonicity of a stiff string.

A good video including the experimental sound samples:

So interesting! I'd never have assumed that was a good idea. I've been wanting to try their 'transtrem' style strings too

Yeah, reducing the stiffness at the clamping points seems like a no-brainer now. There is inharmonicity added due to loss of uniformity of mass per unit length, but it should be much smaller than that due to stiffness of a thick string.

    Thanks for the link.

The experimental results were that the standard taperwound string had slightly higher inharmonicity than the standard non-taperwound stirng, which was a surprise to me (with lumped-taperwound lower than both). However, even if so, i still prefer taperwound to non-taperwound due to the improved brightness and sustain.

Wow, super interesting, and totally counterintuitive!
