I’m really out of the loop. I’m looking to spend 3-4 hundred on a new, or used, 7 string. Is the rg7421 still one of the better options for me to look at? I just wanted to check to see what’s the current opinion really. I’d be looking to upgrade pickups as well.

I'd say so, specially in the used market and if in good condition.

The Jackson JS22-7 is really worth having a look at. Maybe I just happened to get a good one but man it plays amazing for $200. You'll probably want to upgrade the bridge saddles, but the tuners and pickups are completely fine.

I think they're a fine instrument for the money.
Especially in the good condition / used market.

I was lucky enough to nab a 7621 for peanuts a few years ago.
Haven't checked on those prices lately...

You should be able to find a second hand 7321 or 7421 with aftermarket pickups for the price. They are solid guitars.

FWIW I grabbed the GIO version recently, GRG7221M, and it's actually a solid guitar. At $169 brand new on sale there's room to throw on whatever pickups you like. I haven't had issues with the tuners or anything. It did need the fret ends filed down a bit, but other than that all I did was set the intonation and play it nearly every day since thanksgiving. I'm even rocking the stock pickups, they're not great but for playing in the living room through my baby amp they're fine.

This is it exactly. I'm able to get away with a 0.056 for a low A. It's phenomenal.

Which 7421? The original one MIJ during the late 90's/early 00's or the current one made in Indonesia?

I'd always go MIJ. But I'm sure the new Indonesian 7421's play well enough too. All of it can be had for dirt cheap if you are patient enough, and are willing to buy used with maybe some cosmetic "issues".
