Is the AX8 still worth buying in 2021?

I've been dreaming of some type of Fractal modeler for a LONG time. I happen to have a few bucks handy and I want to finally get one. My price range, right now at least, is in the AX8 territory. Long story short, is the AX8 still viable today? I'm not playing live, just a bedroom rockstar, but I do plan to attempt to record some stuff, however I already have a Focusrite interface so the Axe FX II is not totally required. What say you?

Idk man, still using the axe-fx ultra for nearly a decade. It’s been holding up quite well although I’m getting some GAS.

I’d say the ax8 is very well worth it today if you’re finding a good price on it, it has some of the firmware was in Axe-III used when it has launched. (Axe-III is using Cygnus now)

Otherwise several folks here will suggest saving and grabbing an fm3/axeIII

    Yes.

But how much more $ is the FM3 in comparison to a used AX8?

I like mine a lot. No more updates but there is a ton of stuff in there. I got mine last year. To use the fm3 live I would need an additional footswitch unit so getting the ax8 made more sense for me.

The AX8 is outdated. I would be patient and save some more for the FM3.

Or, the lesser priced options such as thw Headrush Gigboard or a Helix.

People still chase POD bean tones .

2nd last gen is a decent place to be if cost is an issue.

If you're itching to get something, and given the use case, I'd say you'd be more than happy with the AX8.

I feel like the AX8 prices are a bit too high right now. If you could get one in the $700 range (incl. Taxes and shipping), it would be worth it. The sounds within the AX8 are still top notch and will remain exactly the same until the unit fails (likely decades). For reference, I sold my Axe-FX II XL with a $160 rack case locally for $900 (prices on Reverb are in the $1200+ range). My FM3 cost $1073 shipped + taxes (USA). If you consider the $900 range price the market is asking for the AX8 against all the updates the FM3 has gotten + Cygnus on the horizon, I'd say the FM3 is the better deal.

I'd say no. Not because it does not sound or feel good, but because the UI is pretty clunky. Same deal with Axe-Fx 2. Both will work if you intend to use it mainly with Axe-Edit from your computer.

Then you have competitor products like the Line6 Helix range that is easier to use and possibly cheaper for the HX Stomp etc.

It's mainly going to come down to price. I see people selling AX8 for a bit under 1000 euros in my country and I don't see any reason to buy it when I could get a new Helix LT for the same money.

I got an AX8 months ago and I'm super happy with it.. Probably should've waited for the FM3 or the Quad Cortex but I really don't care, I'm able to get incredible tones out of the AX8.

I'll recommend the AxeFx 3. Great creative tool, perfect for the bedroom ;)

Joking aside, the AX8 sounds great, you can do a lot with it but as others havre said - weigh the cost against the new FM3. If there are only a few hundred in it, I'd save and get the FM3.

There are alternative options you could look at, but if you're set on fractal, buy fractal.

FWIW, you can just bump the high frequencies by 1-2db on the global output on the AX8 and you get a much crisper sound akin to the FM3 as that's the biggest difference right out of the box imho aside from the slight change in feel (which isn't better or worse, just subjective).

If my FM3 died and smoeone offered me an AX8, I would be just as happy once I set up some patches.

I'd spring for an Axe FX II over an FM3. The biggest draw for me is the tone match, which the FM3 doesn't have.

Heck, even the AX8 has tone match, I think the decision to leave it off the FM3 doesn't have any merit.
