Hey guys,

Haven't been as active as I'd like to recently with mixing and recording, but I've been practicing lately with this demo of a track my band is fleshing out. Using Nerual Fortin Cali and Darkglass for guitars and bass with SD 2.0 for drum programming. I'm not super satisfied with how the bass sits in the mix and I'm really unsure what to do with it to help it gel more. I'm going for a roomy yet aggressive sound, ala Godcity recordings.

Here's the track in dropbox. Let me know what you think!

The bass as of right now is the most polished and “finished” part of the mix. This is kind of causing it to be the focal center.

The drums are a little underpowered/underwhelming for something this gritty. Do you have any good saturation plugins like Slate VCC at your disposal? If so, throw that on the individual channels and go to town. Don’t be afraid to slam the meters.

The guitars also feel kinda small, and thin by comparison to the bass. I can’t pinpoint it exactly, but I’d maybe try a different IR or blend of IRs. Ideally with both the guitars and drums you’re going to want to get them as big sounding as possible so that they can compete with the bass track. From there you can focus on carving out more space in them for everything to form together, if that makes sense.

TLDR: the bass sounds sick and is huge. Make the other components of the mix bigger starting from their raw sounds. It’s easier to carve space and make something smaller than it is to try and force something that’s not big enough to sound bigger.

Also, the song is badass! :)

Thanks for all the tips!
I tried to saturate the drums further to add more body and grit. I did the same to the guitars and it seems to have addressed some of the issues!
