Ibanez 7th Heaven Video

I'm sure it was posted million times but i think its worth to post it for those who haven't seen it or are new like me.
This was the golden years of Ibanez 7th string guitars, still today, i prefer John Petrucci Ibanez to the Music Man.

The video features: Korn, Mr Vai, Mr Petrucci, Limp Bizkit, Dino Cazares etc...

Seems like they should have done something like this with 8 string guitars, unless they did and I totally missed it lol

I think with 8 string guitars there was not any musical movement or trend, so to speak, who pushed the 8-string guitars.

With 7-string, as you could see on the videos, there was a musical trend. Steve Vai wanted to push himself further on the technical sound and explore new territories. Dream Theater were basically trying to reinvent themselves and go into a more technical heavier metal way. Korn, Fear Factory and Limp Bizkit were starting what would be later called "Nu-Metal". In addition Ibanez was all over with their Universe/RG guitars.

With the 8 String guitars beside Meshuggah what other popular bands are using them ? There is hardly a trend.

Maybe not as mainstream as the 7 string examples but there has absolutely been an 8 string movement with Periphery, Volumes, Animals as Leaders, After the Burial and a fairly mainstream example with the Deftones.

Again, not as mainstream as Korn and Limp Bizkit but the aforementioned bands definitely inspired a lot of other bands to utilize 8 string guitars.

Also my friend just sent this to me, in honor of the song that blew Korn up (I'll be re-evaluating the strength of our friendship) so it is clear that Munky doesn't have a monopoly on cringe. And that was 1996. It is now 2022. What's Robert's excuse?

I could be wrong but I didn't start hearing that genre label attached to that sound until bands like Periphery and Animals as Leaders blew up. Back in the 90s/early 00s, Meshuggah was just some indefinable prog metal band with polyrhythms, but nobody was calling them "Djent."

Also I've never played an Ibanez JPM but I love my RG7620 and I also love my EBMM JP7.

It's hard to think there are more bands notably using 7s then, than there are using 8s now. But maybe I'm wrong. Most Nu Metal era bands were just tuning down their 6 strings.

Dunno if I'm unique in this or not but I got the impression KoRn blew up from basically how much their stuff was being spammed in Hot Topic and on Hit Parader/Metal Edge etc. A lot of bands that you were seeing t-shirts and merch name dropping them and, at a time, no practical way of actually hearing them.

Korn was one of those bands I remember seeing the posters and t-shirts for years before you can actually access their music on TV/radio (Blind was in 1994, but Korn wasn't really on the radio until 1997ish). Some of those bands they tried like hell to jump from the racks at Hot Topic to TV/radio mainstream but they never really made it there. Coal Chamber and HIM are two that come time mind that were just a teenage lifestyle brand more than they were a band throughout Nu Metal era, eventually had a single but never caught on; but their merch was still EVERYWHERE.

Jazz player is awesome, actually, and I had no idea Andy Timmons was in this. I mostly just watched the Vai demo segment, always loved that riff. Also, the guy from Korn who isn't talking is stoned as shit, huh? Other guy is surprisingly articulate.

Only band really making use of 8 string guitars, that I have seen, are Animals as Leaders. I absolutely love Meshuggah, they're one of my all time favourite bands, but they could easily play all their songs on a baritone 7 string.
