I'm not going to play "pick the definition that validates my argument" with you.

Why are you so fixated on the past?

You choose to associate a word by the most negative connotation to get offended by it. How's that my fault?

Historically this word has been used in various contexts and you chose one of them to equivocate the definition to.

Are you offended by Dave Chappelle too?

Dave Chappelle has demonstrated that he thinks that he can't punch down. So he's a homophobe and a TERF. He's being very disingenuous when he says he doesn't know why he can't say other groups' reclaimed slurs, because he thinks being black puts him lowest. He's a piece of shit.

Also, please stop saying slurs. You're not doing it in anything like an academic enough sense to get away with it. It was pretty fucking obvious to say "homophobic slur", and nobody would have had any doubt. As a result, your title reads like you think there is nothing wrong with what the guy said.

I'm not saying it in an academic sense, but I'm saying it without the homophobic context you seem to think I am saying it in. Stop assuming I'm homophobic please and stop choosing the context that affirms your beliefs.

Dave Chappelle is a comedian, I think many people forget what comedy is. Seems like you don't understand the context of the joke either. It has nothing to do with being black. You're actually racist if you think that that's what he was going for.

The title reads what you people wabt it to read apparently before I even made these comments.

Same comment as the above, by the way. I'm not going to play "pick the definition that validates my argument" with you.

Just so it's clear, the guy did say it to be homophobic (and that's wrong) towards the gay passenger next to him and he should be fired for making his company look like they hired an idiot.

Granted, I've never lost my shit and screamed at people on a plane, but I can accept that people can have things going on in their lives, maybe having an incredible bad/stressful day etc. We've all said things we later regret, or been unnecessarily cruel/spiteful out of anger. Should he be kicked off the plane? For sure.

But does he really deserve to lose a job as a chemical engineer, which has literally nothing to do with any of this? The dumbest thing he did was specifically invoking his job, thus bringing attention to GSK. So I can see how the "justice" aspect gets people cheerleading, but I don't think it's fair to hunt him down and TRY to get him fired
Companies check your social media before they hire you these days. People have not been hired because of unsavory conduct there.
He should have been fired due to terminal stupidity, bringing his job into the fray. Then he should have been fired for being someone the company would want to have no association with. THEN he should have been kicked off the plane. And finally, the plane should have run him over backing out of the gate.

Then you're spelling it wrong. I didn't assume you were a homophobe, I said your title implies you are defending him because the words you, presumably intentionally, chose diminish the seriousness of the matter.

You really don't understand comedy if you think I was talking about one specific Dave Chappelle joke.

What do you mean "you people"?

My point, which you seem to have missed, is that your choice of words is that of those defending slur usage and discrimination. It sounds like the disingenuous argument of any number of right wing assholes. If you were not trying to trivialise the matter then your title and lack of context in your post has given everyone in this thread the opposite impression.

Maybe in a large company or corporation that's in the public eye. Roofing or framing companies could give a rats ass what your personal thoughts are. And yes, let's murder him by running him over because he has questionable judgement.. wtf makes you better than him by saying something totally out in left field like that?

Even the most hateful vile disgusting people have the right to earn a living. But, as a chemical engineer making a great 6 figure salary? No. He no longer deserves that kind of comfortable life. Plenty of openings for line cooks at various places. Maybe some struggle will teach him some direly needed empathy for those that do face challenges in life relative to their homosexuality or skin color.

You seemed pretty keen on extrajudicial murder in the gun thread, but now it's not ok?

Ugh, this thread reminds me of like a jr high kid who thinks they just discovered some "loophole" to run around the school saying slurs.

That's a video about how it became offensive, but also notice that in most of the video, it was used in a comedic context and that context was important because no one left that conversation offended. (At least it didn't seem that anyone left that conversation offended.)

When people say, "it is always homophobic", it is an attempt at policing other people's language and pretending to care about a topic they really don't care about. It's pathetic and actually disingenuous.

I understand why it's offensive, I don't understand why it's always offensive to everyone at all times or why there's such a stigma around it that might support the latter.

Example:

If you tell someone what they're saying is exactly how you interpret it without any regards to what their intention it, it is often times viewed as dismissive. Now tell them that they shouldn't or are not allowed to say those words due to the way you interpreted it. I wonder why people would try and provoke someone trying to police other people's language.

Because no one is ever trying to call anyone a literal pile of sticks, so anyone with a firing brain cell understands its intent is to be offensive.

It's always offensive at all times and the only people willing to use a slur at all are people who are being bigoted or people who don't care whether or not they seem bigoted. It's a term used to disparage an entire minority group and it literally doesn't matter that it could have other meanings, if you respect those people you won't use the word. The fact that you're arguing this point at all is pretty rough.

That's kind of the point of offensive words, to be offensive. It doesn't mean it's always malicious.

Kind of like when you quote someone and say "anyone with a firing brain cell", can be interpreted as offensive and malicious as well.

Are my opinions less valid somehow if I suffered from a learning disability?

I respect people regardless of their sexual orientation or race, but it appears if I use a certain set of vocabulary, you can invalidate how I feel towards others.
