Just curious if anyone had any suggestions: my gf's been learning guitar for a good while now and I think we're at the point where we could start playing together, if the simpler part is mostly power chords / simple scale-type stuff, minimal bending. I think it's really great motivation to play with other people and help teach timing, but I'm having trouble thinking of good songs where the two parts really synch and complement each other, and are just fun riffs, without both parts being pretty crazy. Any ideas in the sort in 80s metal / power metal / death metal?

Iron Maiden was the gold standard for two guitarists back then.

Many two guitarist bands are just both playing same riff (Metallica) which isn't as much fun. What about Slayer? I never liked them so I can't really say if they're one riff or layered. (Only song I ever learned was South of Heaven and I don't even remember it lol) I do think Exodus had some songs where they were playing separate parts.

Yea, Maiden was the first thing I thought of but now as I'm actually stepping through the songs I'm not finding great parts (no doubt they're there somewhere). It's like you can count on great two-part guitar in the solo sections, but there the skill divide is too great. But I'm trying to find it via youtube covers, maybe I should checkout the guitar pro arrangements or something.

Def Leppard Hysteria is a good one. It's easy enough for beginner with even basic chops. Even the solo is easy.

Guns and Roses first album has a lot of cool but subtle differences between the two guitar parts.

How do you guys feel about punk? Rancid has some great material, one guitar is basically acoustic breakdowns and the other is some simple melody. Easy, fun, catchy, but not very brutal.

Social Distortion fits the bill too.

Buncha Arch Enemy stuff. Michael's leads are mostly one or two string melodies, not a lot of fast stuff.

    Good call.

Same with Carcass on Heartwork and Swan Song. Tons of groove and melody.

Might be bending the 80’s/power metal thing a bit far but there’s a bunch of Coheed & Cambria songs that are a blast to play with two guitarists. A Favor House Atlantic is fun.

    What about something like this?

A lot of punk like Nofx, Pennywise, etc have some pretty easy two guitar things to play.

Good Apollo Vol. 1 & 2 albums have some killer stuff to play for two guitars as well, immediate one jumping to mind is Ten Speed of God's Blood and Burial as along with the self-titled tracks of Apollo I & II.

Were the gods that we praised.

Could learn some sum 41 songs off Chuck.

If you want to play fast harmonized parts, tossing a wilhelm scream into the ring.

    As for metal suggestions:
Megadeth - Hangar 18 isn't too difficult for the rhythms and harmonized parts. Marty's leads are pretty fun to play if you can handle them. A Tout Le Monde - chorus has 2 guitar part, rhythm and solo, then dual harmony at the end. Symphony of Destruction.

Judas Priest - Painkiller, Hellion/Electric Eye

Death - Trapped in a Corner, Without Judgement

Opeth - Moonlapse Vertigo, Harlequin Forest/Reverie

    Nightingale - Shadowland Serenade, Shadowman

Mercyful Fate - Evil, Curse of the Pharaohs, A Dangerous Meeting

Testament - Sails of Charon, Man Kills Mankind (last 30 seconds has some tasty harmonies), Children of the Next Level

Carcass - The Granulating Dark Satanic Mills, Unfit for Human Consumption, Embodiment

Hard rock/Alternative (might be easier than the metal material if she's a beginner):
A bunch of Stone Temple Pilots has layered guitar parts with melodies over the rhythms. Plush, Big Empty, Seven Caged Tigers, Sour Girl, Hickory Dichotomy

Same with Pearl Jam. Alive, Jeremy, Even Flow, Black, Rearview Mirror, Corduroy

Alice in Chains - Down in a Hole, Heaven Beside You, No Excuses, Over Now (fun tuning), Voices
