Which, in all honestly, from a business perspective that makes a lot of sense. Would've been nicer if they didn't have to destroy ~500 guitars to get there, though. But it is something to take note of when gibson says "LOOK HOW GOOD WE'RE DOING!"

This comes back around to the "why not donate" question then. If there's nothing wrong with them, other than that they didn't sell, what harm would be done by making them available to schools or something?

This boils down to if they did or did not manufacture the floor units. We saw them destroy the guitars, but we don't have any idea if they destroyed, or even manufactured, the floor units. The floor units are required to have the guitar function, so if there are no floor units, the guitars are firewood.

They don't function as normal guitars without the floor units.....?

Correct. The Firebird X has a goofy and terrible electronics setup; it requires a special floor unit to work at all, and you can't run it without all of the pointless effects.

And it eats through its battery in about an hour.

People keep saying they should be donated to schools. Never mind that Gibson does donate lots of guitars to schools, but how many schools have music programs with guitar as part of it?

Urgh, Six Sigma. Off topic, however there are times where I just want to do a global email at work with this link in it:

The garbage people come up with. Seriously, if you want to make a mint, re-hash one of those and present it at a Gartner conference to a bunch of drunk BA's and PM's. /rant

And all the decision-makers at Gibson couldn't see any potential for problems?

And how many of said music programs will have the resources to repair these overly complicated, proprietary part needing, guitars?

I saw this and wasn't really shocked. I have a business in construction. Mostly plastering walls and occasionally drywall. I sometimes do and see something like this too. If something does not work out or you screw up, then you think about what it would cost, reusing the materials in labour and usually the cheaper option is to throw it all out and use new parys/materials. This is common practice in the industry. I just don't know why they would film and upload this video.
Personally, I get the feeling there was a huge over estimate in sales and they rather get rid of those guitars. Also, if they give them away or sell at a b-stock price, they might lose sales from people who were gonna buy a Gibson at full price otherwise. It is called cannibalizing.

At the very least just turn them into some type of wall art or something and sell them as Gibson art, like clocks or lamps or something. SOMETHING.

There’s two things at play here. One is the idea of destroying them vs not. I can see where it just makes sense to destroy them. For tax purposes, for not letting these into the wild, for saving time/effort to move onto other things, etc.
The other is the way they did it. If this was Gibson that lined them up, drove over them with an excavator, and then had to clean it up, then it’s baffling that they thought this would go over well. If someone else did it (those who bought the warehouse) then it’s baffling that Gibson isn’t saying anything about it, but instead just defending its reason for doing do. It just seems odd that they’d say, “look how much shit we made! Now watch us make a spectacle of beating up our shit!” To me, Gibson wins the award for coming up with the worst decisions year after year, decade after decade.

It just feels like people are angry to be angry here.

Folks hated these things from the moment they were announced. Hated. I mean, at least two threads on here had to be closed from becoming so toxic because people hated these so much.

Now you're telling me, after years of saying they should just be destroyed, when it actually happens, ya'll aren't okay with it?

Folks are just looking for something to get rilled up about here.

This clip wasn't released by Gibson, it was posted by a former employee to stir the pot and give himself a moment in the sun. If you read the interviews with him it's awfully apparent that he has an angle here (see: former employee).

Gibson's response has been pretty straightforward. This doesn't deserve anything more.

During my first week at Taylor Guitars, the finished goods manager took the new hires out back for a competition called "whoever could throw a guitar the furthest, can go home early" and for this occasion, the guitars to be thrown were about 6 completed Doyle Dykes' signature guitars and 8 completed PS14ce guitars.

I mean it’s been basically...people that have jobs that make stuff or understand what’s going on.

    - things get destroyed all the time. Millions of things. In every industry.

    People in their bedrooms.

    - I can’t believe this is happening.

Meanwhile prs probably destroyed 10 completed cores and half a private stock this month.

To the people complaining about waste or whatever I have a question...

What do ya’ll think QA means. And what do you think the process entails.

Like you think every company has a team of specialists that goes in and fixes every guitar that isn’t up to spec?

Like there’s one dude who’s only job is to meticulously fix neck warps and another guy who redos paint?

Is that the kind of crazy world you think you live in?

We keep saying this as if the frequency or normalcy of it is justification in its own right. Waste is waste, and it sucks whether it's normal or not.
I think it's legitimate to be upset about the waste, and want to see improvement happening in these regards, while acknowledging that there might not have been any other option at the time.
