Hey, I am thinking about getting myself a 6 string fretless bass, something pretty cheap (a Brice) to start off, I play guitar mainly so this is more to just dick around.

But either way I want to use it to make some recordings for my music, and I really love the sound of a good fretless bass, but again I am not a bass player so my knowledge on bass rigs is very limited.

So I am asking for opinions/recommendations for bass amps that would be good for recording? I dont need a stack, just a relatively cheap combo amp or something that can give me tones comparable to J. Paul Thesseling or Dominick "Forest" Lapointe.

So if anyone can give me some ideas/advice I would greatly appreciate it.

Also, any good pickups that I would be able to swap these for? I will most likely replace them but again my knowledge in this field is very limited.

    Thanks

Bass recording I find is actually very possible with little gear. DI straight into the interface actually sounds pretty great, especially for a natural fretless sound (if the tone of the bass itself is nice) - but if you want something more, consider a pedal like a Darkglass or a Sansamp. My Darkglass B7K straight into my recording rig is all I need for fantastic bass tone for recording and playing (through the monitors)

I will try it, and see how it sounds, thanks.

But do you also have any preference on a combo amp that would work with a good ol' mic setup?

I was always happy with my Ashdown Mag300C210 or something back in the day :)

But honestly if you're recording, it's way cheaper and easier to use a Bass Pre-amp like a Tech 21 or Darkglass Preamp.

Also look into the Ibanez GWB35 if you're looking into cheap fretless options.

I've noticed most bass amps are fretless.

+ 1. I'm also primarily a guitarist, but I own one of those, and it's always sounded great, regardless of what kind of bass I've run through it.

I've gone through probably 10 different bass preamps in the last 15 years or so. If you're looking for that thick and full fretless tone, then there is no doubt in my mind that the Aguilar DB680 is the best piece of gear for the job. Not cheap, but there's nothing that has ever come close to it that I've tried.

    SWR or Carvin.

Tech 21 Sansamp if you just need to record.
