A strong wind blows at your back as you stand ready. Amongst friends and family alike the time has come to defend your homeland. Your honor! The scent of fire. The taste of blood...The sun begins to rise on the horizon and at once you hear the sound of the horn...

Thus is the spirit of Viking Metal!
I have been a huge fan of this expansive style for many years. The stories of times past painted in music. I always found it to be very expressive especially for those who feel a natural connection with nature...or just like the idea of huge vikings swinging swords at each other!

To my ears nothing comes close to being as catchy as those awesome folk melodies! Another thing I always liked was the use of folk instruments. Elvenking with that awesome violin, Eluvietie with the hurdygurdy and tin whistle, etc.

Needless to say, Folk and Viking metal are very different beasts, but the spirit is very close at times. I'm not too picky, if it's got that feeling it's all the same to me!

Lyrically, we have themes of nature and of the self. Very deep meanings hidden within, I recommend you guys looking into. It's a very fun style of music to analyze...plus they have the greatest drinking songs ever made! :hbang: (Korpiklaani

Edit: Can somebody help with the videos? I searched the FAQs but I couldn't find anything...

Ensiferum I love them, the best live show I've seen so far.

Do Amon Amarth count? THey're more melodic death with viking themes but still a band I really enjoy although I wish they'd play some more technical stuff.

All you have to do is paste the actual video URL. If you want to edit your original post so they show up, though, you'll have to go into the "Advanced Edit" for your post first and then paste them.

Thanks a lot! It's about time I learn, eh?!

Many bands I forgot about! Turisas is definitely a favorite!
I love Ensiferum, but I miss Ensiferum when Jari was in charge!
Still, Wintersun is better than good enough to make up for the change, although it's a shame that such a great musician can't make enough money to release what should be another masterpiece. :wallbash:

I'm currently in the process of reviving a very old project I had going way back when I was 16. Battle themes, folklore, awesome melodies! Here's the link if you guys are ever interested, I'm hoping to have some new stuff up very soon! :hbang: www.myspace.com/vorgormorth

Funny thing about the completely random name, but that's another story!

    Let's keep this going...

I recall hurting my neck windmilling to Amon Amarth back when I had a head of hair. Twas metal as fuck.

And pitting to Ensiferum last summer. What a jolly, yet suprisingly brutal occasion.
