So I am having a custom 7-string build and am having a tough decision on what tremolo I want to go with. I listed some I have been thinking about below. It will be a double-locking system. It will be an explorer shape, and I have thought about going headless, but not entirely sure yet (if you have opinions there, chime in). What do you guys think?

Original Floyd Rose (or variants): Not much needs to be said here. It works, it has been around forever so parts are plentiful, and will not be going anywhere anytime soon.

Lo-Pro Edge: Again, tried and true with some arguable improvements over the OFR. I cannot seem to find them for sale though, did Ibanez stop making them again?

Sophia 2:92: Works with both traditional and headless. Some cool improvements (such as the block system) and looks more modern and streamlined. Very little talked about though, so hard to get an opinion on it, although I have read almost nothing other than positive opinions, as few as they are.

That's about it since Kahler sucks (really like how they feel though, which is unfortunate) and I like to use my trem, not block it, so I do not want a Hipshot or something similar.

Gotoh seems to make Edge units in batches. There will be a dry spell and then they'll be in stock everywhere again, everywhere being specific authorized channels as they don't sell them at retail like Floyd Rose does.

If you like the Ibanez designs, definitely take a look at Hantug.

Hantug's is just a titanium Floyd Rose, I do not see anything Ibanez-ish.

Oh, that is why I glossed right over it; they do not offer that (according to the website) in a 7-string format.

Email them and they'll make it. They do an 8 string version because a guy on here ordered one.

I was going to say, are they really worth the damn $1k tag? I get it, it is all titanium, but really?

I did have titanium saddles on an OFR years ago and they were quite nice and did make a noticeable (positive) change in tone and sustain, but...

I think they make a regular metal one too if you ask.

But honestly just get the Sophia.

Wood is free if you already have an axe. What's your point?

Check out the dude's social media. He'll make just about anything.

    Pricing is per piece too.

It's almost as if raw materials are marked up when bought from a supplier *eyeroll* That, and titanium is more difficult to work with than brass, aluminum or the shit pot steel that is commonly use to make bridges, requiring different tools and more expensive CNC bits. all factoring in to a more expensive end product. Not to mention each piece is a one off, but I guess yea, he should probably sell them for $170 instead

Personally I'd go with the Floyd Rose, they're easy to come by and you can mod them to your heart's content. Putting a bigger/fancier block in (I've had good experiences with fu-tone) can be a really nice upgrade.

FWIW, I've swapped trems on the same guitar. The OFR7 is brighter and snappier. The Lo Pro 7 by comparison is darker with slower attack. Conventional wisdom I guess is that titainum would be brighter still.

I prefer the feel of OFR, but that's a personal preference.

The Sophia is brass, I think, so I'm not sure of it's durability. I assume it would sound closer to the zinc Lo Pro than the steel OFR.

That titanium lo pro is absolutely insane. I’d love to try one.

In order, because it's low profile, doesn't have any plastic bits, made by Gotoh, and flutters.

Also widely available as a 7 string.

Ah, I forgot that there is another that is interesting as well.

T4M (Technology for Musicians: Made in Italy and seems to incorporate the headless fine-tuning style regardless of if it is the headless version or traditional. I have watched and read some reviews and people seem to like them. I cannot tell if it is locking or not.
