So today while I was playing on the red channel there was a problem with the power @ my place, it quickly went out and back on - and there it was, no sound came out at all from the red channel.

Green and blue channels seem to be fine. When I'm on the red channel, there is no noise whatsoever, only very dim white noise. Even when the jack isn't plugged into a guitar, there seems to be no noise at all, no buzzing when I place my finger over the jack.

Is it only a preamp tube problem or could it be worse?

Preamp tubes would definitely be the place to start. No sense jumping to conclusions beyond that, I suppose it could be a switching problem but it doesn't seem very likely.

Check online in the amp manual for a tube task chart. From there, try a known good tube in each of the slots that affect only the red channel. If that doesn't work, there may be more than one bad tube or internal issues and you'd be best off having the amp looked at by a tech.

Update. It seems that the V2, V3, and V4 tubes affect only channel 3. Could one damaged tube stop the signal completely?

Yes. Just order a pack of JJs, they're cheap and that's what comes stock anyway.

so V1 only affects channel 1 and 2 ? that should explain the insane gain in channel 3 i guess

Straight from the company to my email inbox a year ago:

    Hello Eric,
You will want to use the Groove Tubes ECC83S preamp tubes - http://www.fender.com/parts/tubes/gt-ecc83-s-single/5550112391.html
and you will want to use the GT 6L6S in a duet in a rating from 8-10 (or high rating) - http://www.fender.com/parts/tubes/gt-6l6-s-duets-rated-1-10/5550113012.html#q=6l6s&start=1

These are the exact tubes we use from factory just with the GT and/or JJ label removed. You should not need to adjust the bias if you stick with those tubes in that power rating.

Thanks for that! The links aren't opening for me though, shows unavailable results.

Any chance you could provide me with different links of those tubes?

Yeah crap, link for the power tubes isn't working for me either. Sorry about that guys. if you just do a search for 6L6s you'll get the results on the fender or sweetwater page. Sorry about that!

Tubes arrived today and I'm looking to put them in right now.

Question is, is there a way to pop the front plate off or do I need to take the back plate off to replace the tubes? Seems like it would be awkward to do it from the back as V2 is hidden behind the transformer.

It's been a while but I remember being able to do it from the front, very easy to change

Replaced V2, V3 and V4 with the Groove ECC83S and not only did it do the job, but it sounds ten times better now!!

For anyone reading this later and wondering about the Grove tubes, even though EVH state they use them stock the bass is way more defined, way more balls and girth while palm muting, and WAY more gain. (anything over 10 o'clock with Fishman Fluences and 11 o'clock with my PRS is way too much)

    Groove Tubes are "selected" JJs.
