Effect Combo for Getting Bass Tone on 7 String Guitar

So, here is my deal:

I'm using Cubase 4 and JamUp Pro (iPhone application)
I'm TRYING to figure out the best (and best sounding) way to record bass tracks using my Ibanez 7 string guitar

My initial thought was to use (chain):

Ocatve - NG - Filter - Drive - AMP - Compress

But I don't think that is yielding the kind of growl I'm looking for (think Norma Jean, maybe even some of the Periphery bass tones).

Does anyone have any suggestions (besides "do it on a real bass") that may be helpful? Thanks!

I think my old chain looked like:

1. Compress hard
2. EQ to roll off everything below 80 and above 4k
3. Pitch down
4. Compress again
5. EQ to emphasize the low end and the "clank" of a scooped bass
6. Bass amp sim + cab sim
7. More EQ
8. Give up and buy a bass because the low end is impossible to get right with a pitched-down guitar
9. Instantly have a better bass tone
