Good grief. It seems like the past few days have been nothing but deaths in the hard rock and heavy metal universe.

It's the passing of an era. ZZ Top were one of the longest running bands with an unchanged lineup. It's been the same 3 guys since for 51 years (1970). I think Golden Earring may have had the same lineup for a little longer if you don't count a few tertiary people (like keyboardists and touring members).

    A band I genuinely loved.
Sadly, the death rate of rock stars is only going to accelerate given they're all going 60+. Dying at 72 like Dusty is something that is still pretty common. All the 70es dinosaurs are on borrowed time now. As a point of reference, Jimmy Page is 77 now.
I'd still bet Keith Richards (77) over Ozzy (72), though.

They played my town like three weeks ago and I really wanted to go but no one wanted to go with me. I was gonna go alone but didn’t. Now I wish I would have. When I was a kid I used to ride with my mom a lot as she made deliveries for my dads business. She always had the classic rock station on and I’ve loved ZZ Top since I was about 5. A good friend of mine passed away Monday at 33, this has not been a good week.

One of the best stories about Dusty Hill is when he worked at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport as a baggage handler while he was a rock star.

"I did not want other people to think that I thought I was full of myself, but the main thing is that I didn’t want to start feeling full of myself. So I did it to ground myself... I had a short beard, regular length and if you take off the hat and shades and wear work clothes and put 'Joe' on my work shirt, people are not expecting to see you. So it’s not that hard to pass yourself off. Now, a couple of times, a couple of people did ask me and I just lied and I said, 'No! Do you think I’d be sitting here?'”

Not that I like what you said, I just agree that it tends to go that way unfortunately.

Damn. I didn’t recognize the name until I clicked on the article.

I don’t remember the last time musicians that I know and like have dropped like flies like we’ve seen with Joey Jordison and Mike Howe. RIP Dusty.

It seems like there have been so many already recently that I lost count: Steven Weinberg (Nobel-Prize-winning physicist), Mike Howe, Joey Jordinson, Count Mbutu, Biz Markie, Jeff LaBar, Robert Downey.... all this month.

Bummed. ZZ Top has really been a band that I came to appreciate over the last decade.

“I’ve been bad, I’ve been good. Dallas Texas, Hollywooooooooood!”
