Maybe this is the right section for this, but I'm curious if anyone uses the middle pickup, typically a single coil, because it seems like a lot of people just dump them down into the guitar. For instance, Yngwie Malmsteen and Ritchie Blackmore just seem to have it for looks. I like all three middle pickup selection options (bridge + middle, middle, and middle + neck), so it seems odd that lots of guitarists either dislike them, or just have them there for looks.

Anyone else use them, or no?

For cleans I only use bridge + middle or middle + neck.

If i could fit all my guitars with a 2 way pickup selector i would. I despise 5 ways!!!

That said, i'm getting a 3 single coil strat sometime this week so maybe i'll actually explore a bit more.

Love the tone of a middle single. Hate the positioning.

They were 3 ways, from what I understand, but people were trying to balance them in-between so they could get middle + neck or bridge. Now people apparently aren't a fan.

the 2 4 standard positions plus all the series possibilities are great.

I usually get a really hot single and screw it down though so it's out of the way.

I haven't noticed it in being in my way, but I use EMG singles, so...

I assume the EMG 5 way strat switch is parallel for the 2 and 4 positions.

I seldom use them for cleans, but I recently dropped them a la Yngwie/Ritchie on my Strats because I hate having to worry half the time about not hitting the middle pickup. Plus, all my other guitars don't have middle pickups so I'm used to there not being something in the way.

Not too often. For a long time my main guitar was an HSH where I put a Dimarzio Protrack in the middle. I have an x2n in the bridge so it was nice to switch to the middle for an easy crunchier sound.

Is it seriously an issue? I know I have EMGs and that leaves more room since there are no staggered pole pieces, but why is so much pick on that side of the string anyways? You're likely slowing yourself down, which is the bigger issue in my opinion.

My Strats are both HSH routed, so I can get bored, order some pickguards from Stratosphere or other Reverb sellers for around 10 bucks, and set them up for HSS or HSH whenever.

I thought the "s" in HSH was for "skip"

I mean for me it is and isn't an issue. On my guitars without a middle pickup I pick either right in between above the bridge and neck pickups or more towards the bridge pickup. But on my Strats it's a mix of in between the bridge and middle pickups, and something like this (not my photo and me explaining it in words is hella confusing):

It didn't seem to bother me at all, and was something I was a bit concerned about before I got my two Strats. Even with the original pickups on both guitars, it wasn't an issue. I don't have enough pick on that side of the string for it to matter.

What a mistery. You will have to dig deeper and get to the bottom of it.

I believe this to be the correct answer :)

In more general terms I think it’s a genre/demographic issue. If you ask the same “do you like middle single coils?” over on say TGP or another more general guitar forum, then the common theme for the answer might be somewhat different than it might be here.

After all, on TGP, apparently PAW is what folks play in churches rather than being a Steve Vai album. ;)

No, and as a general rule I avoid anything SC because for several reasons. I don't think that asking SSO about middle pickups is going to get a lot of "yes" answers given how our guitars are kitted out, and what music we tend to gravitate to. Hell, when I had my S set up, they re-raised the middle pickup on me even though I did in fact dump it into the body as low as it could go ... and I remember uttering a few curse words over it because it gets in the way.

I wire my strats and HSH guitars so that position 3 of the 5 way selects the bridge and neck in parallel. I have two guitars where a push-push volume gives you the middle by itself, but I raaaarely use it. I’ve since stopped wiring guitars with that option.
