You could have just said "trad metal" and people would have known what you're talking about

Can we please appreciate the irony here, that I first heard of Wuerzburg in 2005 when my brother went there with my bandmates to see Virgin Steele at the Keep It True, and I now LIVE THERE (meaning HERE, since it's where I am now)???

I'm a metalhead since I was 8 years old, in 1986
I listen to all things metal, past and present (and mostly any kind of music)
Some stuff that is called "metal" is less metal than stuff that it's not.
Call me crazy, but I think that Prodigy are way more metal than Manowar or Rhapsody or Stratovarius (all bands that I like, but speed and distorted guitars aren't enough to be metal)

Yeah, gonna have to call you crazy on this one! To be fair I don't even know who Prodigy is but the 3 bands you mention are really really metal imo. Cheesy? Yes, but very much metal.

If you had said some of the more modern bands like Sabaton, Amaranthe etc. then I might agree because that music really moves away from metal and towards pop.

I look at it like this: for the bands you mentioned the cheese is added on top of the metal whereas for many more modern bands the cheese actually replaces the metal.

Note I do not mean to diss modern music here, that's not the point I'm making.

But this is so metal:

Obviously everyone has his "meaning" of metal
For me the main point is "aggression" which Rhapsody hasn't got, or at least I concede that they have an aggression in the arrangements, but not in the spirit

That's interesting to me! Personally I do find aggression in Rhapsody but I could understand that thought when it comes to Stratovarius (or also say Keeper-era Helloween).

Anyway, I think sometimes people get offended if it's said that something "isn't metal" as if that means the music is bad. To me it's more an interesting discussion about genres and it's cool to hear other people's perspectives.

I listen to many styles of music that isn't aggressive, so aggression isn't a quality over which I rate music, but it's the think that makes something "metal" to me

The amount of people getting butthurt over obvious satire is pretty funny.

I like some heavy metal bands, and vastly prefer them over most "modern" metal bands. There’s a grit, rawness and attitude that I find in bands like Enforcer, Skid Row, Toxic Holocaust et al that I have a hard time finding in "djentier", more modern-sounding bands.

Personally find modern music overly processed and clinical. Lacks raw energy which to me is critical in metal.
