In high school he was the only rap artist I could stand cause at least his beats were sometimes cool. Also, party up had some hilarious lyrics/vocal “melodies.”

    regardless, he was a legend.

I knew the name but couldn't say I knew anything about his music, however it sounds Iike he had a penchant for dog fighting, which is deplorable.

I havent listened to him in a decade but after hearing the news I dusted off his first two albums.

They hold up really well. RIP. Addiction is no joke.

It really is a shame, next to Busta, one of the most distinctive voices in hip-hop. Even if you didn't know the song, you knew it was him. RIP :(

Good times listening to Flesh of my Flesh, Blood of my Blood, and it's dark and hell is hot. Bought them when I was going through my hip hop phase. Solid albums indeed.

Yep, I have both of those. Saw him quite a while back on a reality show and he was looking rough.

    One of my favorites.

First album of D's that I listened to started off, "I got blood on my hands cuz there's no remorse, got blood on my dick cuz I fucked a corpse." Plus the Damien stuff. I thought it was more interesting than most of the other bullshit MTV propped up. RIP

Just heard this news. Gutted. Not really listened to him for a long time but for a couple years after Party Up came up I was really in to his stuff had all his albums up to Grand Champ. Those first 4 albums are brilliant. His stuff was so dark and he had such a unique flow unlike the mumble rap of the likes of fiddy. As @ArtDecade said shame he never got on top if his demons.

Eh, I don't think Fiddy is quite mumble-y. He slurs, apparently because of getting shot. Anyways, DMX had a great flow. Unique and you believed that he wasn't just some booth gangsta. He really sounded like he meant it (not that gangsterism is something to applaud or whatever, just that he wasn't someone to toy with).

I never dove too deep into his catalogue, but what I did hear, I liked.
But it wasn't his music that made me respect him, it was his attitude. One of the few guys in that scene that didn't really seem to care too much about fame and everything, and was a dude that just really wanted to make bangers and delivered.

I knew he had spoken about his struggle with addiction in the past, but didn't know he had relapsed. Sad to see.

I am not certain that he exactly relapsed so much as just never quit. He had also gained a decent amount of weight at some point, which may or may not have been due to drug use, stopping, or needing a medication for some health reasons. Perhaps he did quit, but I'm not sure.

As for his attitude, yeah, he didn't seem to really care about that Hollywood and entertainment industry shit.

A few years ago he came in to the grocery store I worked at to buy some crab legs. Dude loved crab legs.

idk if he ever made peace with his son but I hope he did.

Heard about this today and was shocked.

I’m as much a rap fan as I am a metal fan; dude was exactly what the game needed after Tupac died and we got all the plastic rappers.

    He’ll be missed.

RIP man. Thanks for all of it.

One of the truest hardworking guys in the rap business.

This may be a metal-centric forum, but I still hold my 90's and early 00's hip-hop close to my heart, back when the game actually had something to say.

It just makes me feel so much older to see a guy like him pass away, although he was way too young to go out to begin with...
