My new years resolution is to decrease my screen time. I realized in 2022. Other than sleeping or bathroom. I am either on my phone reading a book on my commute to work or on a computer or at work or watching tv in bed or making or recording and mixing my music or playing guitar with amp sims on the computer. Any advice or suggestions to decrease screen time in 2023?

get a non smart flip phone, get a stand alone multi tracker, get a floor based or desktop amp modeler like a fractal fm3, a helix or even a just a headrush, read physical paper pages, take the tv out of the bedroom. I will send a bill for this session. i am not a psychiatrist or doctor , but i did slept at a Holiday Day Inn Express last night.

My suggestion would be:
Everytime you think about posting a thread here, grab the guitar and play instead.

That will not only reduce screen time but also the urge to check back your own thread to see who replied on it. The added bonus is that you will also improve as a player and will enjoy playing guitar more.

But i am using my computer to use amp sims and record on my computer.

See? You repliead on the thread. Why are you not playing guitar? :yoda:

Most of my time playing video games like TFT or browsing here/auctions I'm playing. I also use my PC as an amp sim

What do you do during breaktime when you work? I work on the project 4 hrs straight ..take a quick 20min coffee break to check my phone and drink coffee and back to work again. Btw its takes me less than 1 min total to come here read the comments..respond and go back to checking my emails or reading the news on my phone. I actually dont read other posts on this forum just my own posts. so no actually i dont spend too much on this forum.

I drink coffee and check my phone for 4 hrs straight…. Then a quick 20mins of work.

But if I ever get caught napping on my desk, when they walk in I just raise my head slowly and say “In Jesus name, amen”.

I would be out of work if i get caught checking my phone longer than my 20min break

Just disable the internet connection while doing music stuff. It's not the "screens"- it's the distractability that comes with them. Just do one thing at a time in front of one.

Technically screen time involves anything when your eyes are looking at a screen from your phone, ipad, computer, tv etc. So i am recording or mixing or playing guitar ...i am looking at my daw, my tracks, music sheet, metronome, amp sim..etc all on my computer.

You shouldn’t feel bad about reading high-quality material on a screen, or anything else that takes the place of something you would otherwise be doing off-screen, and especially not about practicing or making music just because there is a screen involved.

If you want to feel bad about something, look into any time spent playing games with in-app purchases, scrolling Instaspam, or worrying about how someone else could be a big enough ass to post the replay that pissed you off in a comments section that you knew you shouldn’t have been reading in the first place.

It sounds like you are using your screens for good things

Thanks. the entire year 2022, a typical day will involve me
- waking up at 5am
- run for 1 hr
- prepare breakfast
-wake kids up
-take kids to school
-head to work which takes 2 hrs each way by train from my home .. this is where i use my phone/screen time ---check e-mails, check gear/guitar/music, check news or read a book. 2 hrs each way. 4 hrs a day.
- get to work and get in front of my computer to work
- 1 hr lunch break - again checkin phones and eating lunch and then back to work
- finish work and take the 2 hr trip home.. again checking phone
- arrive at home. eat dinner with family.. help kids with homework
-read them a bedtime story and put them to bed
- do the dishes
- take a shower..
- by now its probably around 11:30pm. now at this point i contemplate wether to just hit the sack or play guitar of which 95% of the time i choose to sleep because i'm tired/sleepy

so 4 hrs (using phone on my way to/from work) + 1 hr (lunch time --using phone ) + 8-9hrs at work = an average screen time of 14-15 hrs a day! help!
is this normal? does anybody get this much screen time on a daily basis?
