Custom Snare Drum

My buddy has been building drums for a while and to indulge him, I told him I was looking for a new snare for my kit and/or a traditional snare to play excerpts on.

His company is Judd Drums. His currently builds in the Stave format and He has only completely one really but has other ready to be finished. He built one for our professor and it was top notch and amazing sounding. It is solid maple though. Mine is 13 x 5.75.

Mine is cherry and maple I believe. He is building it and has everything and he is gonna try to have it finished by the end of the weekend this coming week.

Here is the pic so far with another drum he is working on. Mine is on the right.

He wanted to experiment with some different snares so I told him I would be down with that so we are using these:

He would sell them and they are for sell. Only one sold is mine. You would have to pay shipping though. I will make some clips hopefully tomorrow when I get it. I will do it in a traditional snare sense and in a drum set fashion.

looks good man! does he do it for income or as a hobby?
i thought about getting into making custom stuff before, the market is over-saturated with builders and companies.
kinda like the custom market for a certain other musical instrument...

He does it for mostly a hobby but it is growing on him. I have it and have pictures, but no sound clips yet. I will try to upload them soon.

Here are the iphone pics finally. Was sunny last week when I got it. Took advantage of it.

Let me tell you....this thing sounds and feels amazing. I had it tuned low like a field drum since we just finished performing "Man of La Mancha" but wow...so punchy and full. Awesome colors and combination of tones. I had to tune it up a bit where the head stretched out but I hope to make a sound clip within the next few weeks. Just have some lessons and classes to teach. I will do it asap my friends.

Not too big on the woods on yours but the craftmanship looks phenomenal! I have a buddy who might be interested in one. Any chance you could divulge his average prices?

Yes he would sell them and ship them. You would have to contact him about prices. Depends on the woods and what you want. Obviously where I have known him a while I get a little different price. But Here is his site Home Page

I love my wood combination because it a nice rich, dark sound. It is very balanced.

Also, he only does stave and I really love it because you get an actual tone from the wood, unlike when you have the wrap style that is a shit ton of glue.
