Hello, new here and just wondering if there are any dark or disturbing albums I could be recommended, stuff like The Downward Spiral or Slipknot's Iowa.

    Thanks

16volt's Supercoolnothing has a lot of NIN-ness in it....to the point where( I think it's the) 2nd track starts almost like a Perfect Drug clone.

Manufactura's Precognitive Dissonance is more electronic, but not like pop electronica

    Skinny Puppy's The Process

Pig's Sinsation - This would be a good first expansion into broad and deep Wax Trax universe, from whence NIN came.

Not like NIN or Slipknot, but for "dark"-mooded music to chill to, Portishead's self-titled album and Dummy are my go-tos when I want something more calm. The The's Naked Self is up there, too (poroduced by

You want disturbing and dark? I give you.....Diamanda Galas

So a lot of her songs are about the AIDS crisis, genocide, and "speaking" for the dead and tortured. They're done in several different languages, as well as glossolalia

Long shot, but look for some Sentenced on YouTube. Their Cold White Light album is one of the best dark Finnish hard rock/metal albums ever recorded.
    More sad/melodic than aggressive though.

Other than that, Paradise Lost has released like a million albums over their career that range from death metal to electronic music, mostly though quite gothic in style. They’re mostly worthy entries.

When I think dark, I reference back to albums I know I've fallen asleep to on car/train/plane rides. There's a variety of styles but they're all what I'd consider to be pretty dark albums

    Reflections - The Color Clear

Movements - all of their releases have some dark clusters of songs in them, though not every song

The Plot in You - Happiness in Self Destruction

Yuth Forever - Skeleton Yuth Forever or Freudian Slip

Woods of Ypres - Woods 4

Uboa - The Origin of My Depression

Cult of Luna - A Dawn to Fear

    Batushka - Litourgiya

    Myrkur - M or Marerdit

Pray for Sound - Everything is Beautiful

Oathbreaker - whatever they're put out

Constellatia - The Language of Limbs

Those are some good ones to start of

The answer is really dependent on genres of music people like. NiN and Slipknot are not really related except both are mainstream.

Crowbar was the first thing that came to mind when I think "dark"

Cradle of Filth is up there too.

Swallow the Sun is pretty gloomy.

Evergrey also tends to have a dark vibe, but is more in the prog metal subgenre.

Older doom metal, Type O Negative, My Dying Bride, Theatre of Tragedy, etc.

Tons of black metal influenced bands. I was a big fan of the first Dimmu album and it is pretty dark compared to anything they do now. Negura Bunget also comes to mind. So does Carach Angren.

There was some doom metal band that did a concept album that was a love tale told from the perspective of a corpse that was being courted and raped by a necrophiliac... That was pretty dark... But not for musical reasons.

Idk if this is what you’re looking for but from different genres the first that come to mind:

    Deftones self titled
The Black Dahlia Murder - Miasma
    Windhand - Soma
The Goddamn Gallows - 7 Devils
oOoOO - ep / oOoOO - Our Love is Hurting US ep
Hannah Cartwright & Ross Tones - All You Leave Behind (idk the album I just remember the song)
Abigail Williams - Walk Beyond the Dark

Something tells me you're getting more than you bargained for with this thread but I may as well add some classics. Hope they are "dark" enough. ;)
