So my purchase of a TC 2290 delay a month or two ago has sent me down somewhat of a rabbithole of researching (and sometimes buying) music gear. It seems like there's just so many cool or weird things. Lots of things that remind me of the Chernobyl plant control room :D I think it's kind of cool that gear that was once for pro studios only is sometimes still expensive, but basically affordable by a normal person.

I don't know if anyone shares this interest, but if so, please post up some cool vintage things. I'll start with a couple I've setup saved searches for:

Yamaha PM-200B Mixing Console from the Early 70's. It has built in spring reverb, and a VU meter.

There was actually a chorus echo rack unit...

Hawk made some awesome stereo gear in the 70s here in Japan. Stereo tape delay:

Moog made this Taurus 3 bass synth you play with your feet:

Completely off topic, but the old control "panel" room at my work was total vintage electronics porn. Gauges, lights, switches, dials, etc. I truly regret not taking pictures before they modernized it and tore everything out.

More on topic, just about everything from the 70's was cool like this. Though it seemed when the decade rolled over it just became more drab. Gone were the big dials and faux paneling, replaced by nondescript black on black with that weird "80's swoosh" of color.

Even the 80s swoosh is endearing in its own way, but ya, I'm more a fan of these proper vintage 70s units. At least the ones that hold up to still performing something close to a useful function.

I want to grab a bunch of those, then move into here:

I recorded on a reel to reel in the 90s before upgrading to a 4 track tape deck. I think tape recording was a lot of fun.

This makes me want to watch the Sound City documentary again.

I love those old Neve consoles. I also love the fact that mixing was much more by ear, there want as much visual feedback as in modern daw's.

Don't get me wrong. Digital has made things sooo much easier and has enabled far more musicians to produce stellar recordings from home.

But I would love to sit and fiddle with one of those things :)

@MaxOfMetal My friends dad had a UE-400 when I was a kid. It was the coolest thing I ever saw at that time. It was the best sounds I ever heard. I wonder what I'd think of it today. Probably still pretty cool I imagine.

A friend of mine has that Univox EC-80 unit which he picked up at a thrift shop for a song. It has a bunch of issues and the tapes are very hard to find, apparently, but if you goose the volumes and put no echo on, it apparently makes a super cool OD. I haven't made my way up to his place to mess around with it, though, so this is all just what he's described to me.

EDIT: Now that I'm thinking about it, that friend has a home studio which is a goldmine for this thread. He collects and restores consoles and older audio gear. Here are some of the cooler things he has (not images of his place, but pics I found online of the same gear):

^This MuTron delay is something he bought as an add-on to a craigslist deal for like $30. Turns out they're SUPER rare and sell for over $1000 in the rare occurrence that they do come up for sale

Geddy Lee was using one of these on this Rush DVD me and my buddy used to watch in high school. I think it was Rush in Rio?

Yeah, they used the original Taurus too. Tool guitar use one too. These came out not to long ago (like within the last 15 years) and I wanted one so bad but it was like $2k and only like 500 or thousand of them were made. It was a limited edition item. Then they all got sold. Now there well over $3k if you can find one.

Maybe not retro yet but it’s in an awkward stage of obsolete and dated, Big Bottom through God’s Cab IR and EZDrummer 2 in Reaper is just plain fun though.
