So I'm buying a new guitar in the next few days and I'm really stuck between two models: RG550 (roadflare red) and RG565 (orange).

I've had a 1992 purple RG550 before, and it was an excellent guitar. From what I know of the Genesis models, they're comparable except the neck is different a little (better?). Originally I was deadset on the RG550... then I saw the RG565.

Couple thoughts from me. I never use a middle pickup, but having the option in case I do is nice. RG550 has a fullsize humbucker vs the stacked one in the 565. I've never (I know) used a stacked humbucker before. My expectation is it will be only slightly less bodied in sound.

My guitars now are the Les Paul, Schecter SLS C-7 Elite FR, Kiesel Aries 7 w/ floyd. The LP is HH obviously, Schecter is HH (7), and Kiesel is HS (7). I'm very heavily leaning towards the RG565 because it looks so badass. But what are your opinions?

I know I'm asking for comparisons on two guitars that are almost identical. Thread is useless without pics

Edit: Oh... also for some reason the reverse headstock is really hitting me hard

This is a really tough choice.

The 550 has a slight edge for me personally. But, the 565 is really cool as well. Honestly they’re both really solid choices and I don’t think you can go wrong here. Maybe just flip a coin?

I feel like there are plenty of RG models with a pickguard like that (RG550, RG1550, RG655, RG2550, RG3250, etc.) but there are not many HS, no pick guarded RG models besides the 565 and maybe a couple older models. Add in the unique orange inlays, reverse headstock, and my vote is 100% for the RG565. I'd love to buy an emerald green eventually.

With that said, would the HS work for you? It sounds like that could be an issue, and if it is at all, then I'd go for the RG550.

The 565 is a little too loud in my opinion, and the matching color dot inlays are just ...I don't know, childish/juvenile isn't the right word but there's something off about them. Maybe gimmicky? The 550 to me is the clear choice.

HS is fine - I was thinking versatility but if I'm honest I'd get by pretty good with only a bridge pickup. I'm an Alexi Laiho simp

I have both the genesis RG550 RFR and the RG565 NO.

I didn't think anything could make my RG550 look "ordinary" until I got the 565. That thing is BRIGHT!

The picture of the RG550 is not a genesis, it is the re-issue (the difference is the neck had titanium rods, where the Genesis models do not have titanium rods).

As far as playability, the are as similar as it would appear (Genesis 550 vs 565).

I tried to upload a pic, but its too big.

Thanks for this. That pic really actually settled it for me seeing them together.

What you said about it making the 550 look ordinary is so true haha.

I feel like for every person saying "565!" there's an immediate follow up to it with, "but man those 550s are killer" which to me sounds like the real choice.

Just buy both?

The best middle ground would be a 565 with a middle pickup and pickguard.

The 550 just for the case that goes with it ;)
That's a picture of the 20th Anniversary RG550. They came with those cases. Current RG genesis models don't come with a case.
However, I would still choose the RG550 over the RG565.

road flare red is the superior color imo.
If Ibanez would make the 550 with a reverse headstock thatd be the end of the argument i think.

Yeah I was just including it for reference

I actually bought one of those for a dude in Sweden and mailed it to him, weird situation. I wanted to keep it so bad.

And yeah, reverse headstock would be the end all

I honestly only read the title and looked at the pretty pictures, but the lower with reverse headstock. color matched dots, and no pickguard is a no brainer.

I vote 565. The color and reverse headstock is so good!

The neck pickup is a blade humbucker right? And are those setup the split/tap?
