    Hi!

I like the guitar tone of Morbid Angel, Trey uses a rack version of the Proco Rat, and he uses it on the CLEAN channel of his Marshall.

Do you know any other metal band or guitarist who uses it?

By the way, I have a clone of it, and I love it! It's so gritty, growly, sludgy :)

Just the RAT? I don't think that gets enough distortion.

Yes, just the RAT. It has plenty of gain! Just check out any MA song if you don't believe.
I thought as many other people that they used it only as a boost, but there are interviews where it's mentiond and gig picutres where you can see that the amp is on the clean channel.

What kind of Rat pedal is that? There are many Rat style dirt pedals that are not direct clones of the original ProCo version, that have way more gain. E.g. mods like the Turbo Rat or pedals like the Walrus Audio Iron Horse.

He uses the rack mount rat. The one that either acts like a 2 channel Preamp or you can boost one Rat with the other. Curious to see if that's what he does.

I read that he doesn't stack them, just use one at a time.

I think they still use Rats as a boost. Just not in the way WE use boosts.

Most of the bands I listen to using RATs are stacking them with other dirt. One of Bongripper's guitarists uses a fuzzrocious Rat Tail, or at least did last time I watched an interview.

Myself, the RAT is always on to add grit and heft to my clean channel, and it feeds into the Pharaoh which constitutes my dirt channel. My experience is that RATs almost always sound better through other dirt, and that other dirt is almost always improved in this way.

Finally, as someone who has made this error, if you find a RAT you like never ever sell it.

    Thank you!

Well I'm thinking about sticking. What about with another RAT?
Well I don't have compersion, but maybe I will buy a RAT2 if I see one used.

    Confirmed (settings ~ dist 10-11 o'clock, filter 9 o'clock, vol = max).
Had a double rat for a while...cascade mode was not what the kids would call good.

Yea that is indeed the settings he uses. And I use the Rat and a few variants as well as a dirty boost, and I use those same settings as they work really well.

I would stack RATs given the opportunity yes. Get two different ones and see which sounds better boosting which. Sounds like fun. I’ve had good experiences with fuzzrocious but there are tons of good clones out there.

A friend of mine who's a big fan of the rat (had some version of one on his board since I've known him) posted a clip of his rat with a HM2 style EQ pedal from Dunn effects and it sound super gnarly going into his jcm800. Not super high gain, but really raw and aggressive and definitely had a bite to it that you could tell would cut through a mix.

The guys from Pelican have used various Rats on-and-off over the years, bass included

    Speaking of bassist.
Jonas of The Haunted uses a Rat to get his tone.

Justin Chancellor (Tool) used a Turbo Rat for bass as well, but he blends with a clean signal and runs an eq after the RAT.

but anyway: IMHO the normal RAT has a lot of gain available. You can get metal tones with one into a clean amp. I did that with an AC30 until I added a master volume, at which point I just use the RAT as a boost though.

The bassist for Knocked Loose used a RAT going into an SVT for their split EP with Damaged Goods. Not sure if he used that setup for anything else they've released, though.
