Anyone owned a Jackson Mike Shannon SL2H-V?

I have the opportunity to purchase one for an excellent price but just wanted to hear from people who have owned them. USA Soloists have shot up in price to the point where I literally cannot afford one.

For those asking "what's that?" - they're Soloists made in Jackson's custom shop by Master Builder Mike Shannon. The specs and hardware are a bit more vintage than a modern soloist, but the one I'm looking at is mostly modern except for the lack of a tremolo recess on the face of the guitar.

I’ve had one and loved it. There’s not really much difference between that and any other USA Soloist, but the top-mounted Floyd alone is enough reason for me to choose that over a typical one. I just prefer that since it feels more like a TOM. They normally have a little more of a heel too, which I think is cool just because “that’s how they used to be,” and doesn’t hinder upper fret access at all for me, but I could see how some might find it a little more obtrusive. If that doesn’t bother you, and you’re cool with a non-recessed Floyd (you can still pull up, just not as far), then I can’t think of any reason not to jump on it—assuming the price works for you and it’s what you’re looking for.

If you don't buy that guitar I will!

I also prefer a top-mounted Floyd to a recessed one--which is a really hard feature to find on a Jackson. I had a custom shop Soloist with a non-recessed Floyd that I regret selling.

I've never owned a top-mount OFR guitar before so if I can nab this one, it'll be interesting. I played a TOM Jackson as a teenager but I've played recessed Floyds since 2008 lol

I don't fully understand why, but I do prefer the top-mount to the recessed Floyd. I think that, in general, a Floyd isn't very comfortable under my picking hand, but for some reason I like it better when it's not recessed. Of course, to each their own, obviously a lot of people prefer the recessed option.

Yeah the non-recessed trem is something to watch for. It will have you're picking wrist in a different spot versus a trem that's recessed into the body.

And I think at least some of these have fret end binding, so the playing surface of the frets will be a little less than if the frets run all the way to the edges of the board like a modern Jackson.

I don't have one of those but I do have a Shannon built Jackson. Seriously after "I have the opportunity to purchase one for an excellent price" everything else is irrelevant. Go get it.

*small note: turns out it's not a Mike Shannon but just a regular Custom Shop order.

Okay so story time:

The sale of my MESA / Boogie 1x12 Mini Rectifier cab was going to give me funds to safely make the purchase, however the buyer tried to scam me out of it. They didn't send payment, so I looked on their profile/feedback and yeah...they'd tried the same thing with 30 other people. So I don't think this is going to happen. I'm now looking at Ernie Balls again

Too bad. I've played a couple of these and they've been excellent...but, the major attractant to me is the topmount Floyd. ;)

Yeah it's a shame. Mike Shannon or not, USA SL2H's/V's are still going to be epic guitars. I've wanted a USA Soloist for a long long time even despite my tastes moving away from metal guitars.
