Basically, tune it as a baritone guitar for the bottom 6 strings, then the 7th string is actually the high E.

To me it'd be only a minor change in tuning, but would give a different perspective on a 7 string.

Vai tried it, used bottom six tuned EADGBE and the last as a high A. It would break too much, even with a super light gauge string.
I thought about this before also, but it's impractical due to the nature of the tension the high A must undergo..

No, that's not it. I mean the Bottom 6 strings tuned as a baritone, i.e. B-E-A-D-F#-B, then the top string would still be an E.

The only difference is the F#, but because the 7th string becomes the "base" string instead of the E, it would play like a baritone, not a 6 string with an extra low string.

Doesnt the E-A-D-F#-B-E make it a lute tuning with a low B?

I tried this recently, playing some baritone country stuff. Saves you having to tune a 6 way down and gives you that extra high range.

i messed around with that tuning years ago! cool stuff. lots of fun since all your "normal" chord shapes work, just moved up a string.

my guitar teacher uses that tuning, minus the low B. seems like it's easier for writing and whatnot, but I dont want to re-learn everything at this point  chords also become slightly awkward

Ive tuned my 7s like this forever. DGCFADG (D standard with a high G) is great. Now with my other 7s I am doing the same kind of thing but lower, having the bottom 6 strings being "normal" with a high top string which would be ADGCEAD (A standard with a high D).

Having the top three strings being a fourth apart is great for leads. I have never wanted to play a seven string any other way. This is just what works for me.

Crazy necrobump, but yes I've used this tuning before. It's fun to play in and it's useful for people just starting playing seven strings because they can play everything just like before with just that higher string instead of the B, so they can still bash out those powerchords without being confuzzled on how to avoid the lowest string.

i very much like dropping the 3rd string half a step to F# on my 7 and 8. makes it easier to write stuff based around B. somehow makes it easier on the 8 to write stuff around the lower F#.

jesus this site existed in 2004?

Longest spanning bump ever! Thanks for bringing back memories...

Back in 2004-2005, I had a guitar tuned DGCFADG because of this thread or another very much like it.

I'd love to see more seven stringers play in weird tunings, like ADADGAD or EEEEEEE

    G down a half step = F#, then F# down a whole step = E

Basically with the G tuned to F#? BEADF#BE would be perfect for playing In Flames and other stuff written in 6 string B standard (or C w/ a capo... Dethklok etc). Great reason to not have a floyd rose!

And yes, I realize necro thread is necro
