I like beefy humbucker in breidge pos, but in neck i always prefer single coils or single coil-ish humbuckers (Full shred).
I used to really like humbuckers, and found the split sound sufficient for my needs at the time. Now I feel like all my tastes in tones and music are slowly changing and I like the single tones a lot better. I just bought a SSS Cutlass that I yet have to do a NGD for. Dig it a lot, even the rounder radius and thicker C neck. Now I just need a good Tele to go along with it! Note: humbuckers are still great when you want very high gain tones.
All bases covered. I really love having a guitar equipped with both. I wouldn’t say I get bored of humbuckers but having the option to switch back and forth can be inspiring. If anything I get bored creatively and having a new sound to work with is nice. It’s the contrast I like the most.
To answer the title of the thread: fuck yes i only record single/split coil djent tones don’t @ me humbuckers are for 2010 fishmans are popular because they sound like trebly singles
What I use single coils for: Clear sparkly cleans Sweet low gain blues soloing Old school rock and metal riffing Speed metal Any instrumental tune in which the guitar carries the melody. What I use humbuckers for Chugging
The problem with single coils was always the noise. But amps, both digital and analog, have gotten so much quieter, EQs have gotten so much more powerful and precise for cheaper, and pickup technology has advanced to the point that there's really not much of a gap between them and humbuckers when it comes to noise floor. At least there doesn't have to be. Two or three decades ago, that was simply not the case. So if you wanted high gain without spending thousands on specialty gear, you just went with 'buckers.
Definitely have a hankering for P90s now... Here's the video of Rabea playing some different Bare Knuckle pickups. Obviously EQd and mixed, but the P90s sound best for metal to me
I don't think I've ever got bored of bridge humbuckers, but I definitely go through phases (lol) of the particular humbucker I prefer. Right now, It's between a DiMarzio FRED and a BKP Juggernaut which both sound really nice split. In the neck though I generally prefer singles.
If there are humbuckers involved in the signal chain, I absolutely DONT care for single coils, in any position. If it’s a strat, all singles, all the time.
The Fred has a bit of single in its DNA anyway. That and the Mo'Joe are my favorite DiMarzios. Grindy, and all the harmonics in all the right places.
Exactly! I tend to play a lot of post hardcore light-djent in drop C or C# and it has just the right amount of bite to cut through nicely
