Hey all, been a while :)

Aside from my own repair stuff, I also work as QC/tech for a major Canadian distributor of a well known Asian guitar brand, and recently I've been discussing with the one of the international brass about the possibility of releasing a commercially made, baritone 8 string steel acoustic, as no one seems to have put one out yet, and because of my experience with erg's, I could help with the design of it. To save on set up costs, it would be based on their baritone templates, and some initial basic specs could be as follows:

    27.75" scale
    Jumbo body
    Solid spruce top
    Mahogany back & sides
    Rosewood board
    LR Baggs pickup system
try to keep it under $800 street.

If it was made...would anyone be interested? I'll check back later....

    Go.

Hey cool! Thanks for that link, I didn't see that as I haven't been around here for a while. :)

But a FF instrument would increase costs tremendously, and the idea is to keep it down to make it affordable.

For a baritone, ABSOLUTELY! I'd put money down on it, too!

27.75 seems like too much for an acoustic, 800 is also too much for that. I mean 800 bucks for an acoustic? Mind as well get it custom handmade to your own specs. Also the pickup doesn't seem necessary and it cill drop the price if you cut it. I'd assume people would be fine getting an acoustic with no pickup...because it's an acoustic. It'd pretty awesome having an acoustic 8 though.

I'd buy one, specs sound good, though I'd probably rather a 27" scale, for OCD's sake

    Ninja'd!

Anyways, Nour Ayasso can't be serious

I think this would be an awesome idea. I don't know what would I do with an 8-string acoustic, but I would want one

27.75 sounds great as does the baggs system and jumbo body. You should be able to keep the body exactly like on a 6 string.

Holy shit, I didn't know that whole voting on parts thing went so far. Those things look gorgeous, and I'm more than likely willing to buy one if they're available/still available when I get my finances straight.

    Most definitely in.

I have no idea why fanned frets should increase cost so much tho. I mean mass production should be about the same. Once the template is laid out -- lather, rinse, repeat.

If a zero fret is used, the frets and the bridge are the only "special" parts.

The suggestion that $800 is too much for a production-line acoustic, for starters. As with electrics, it depends on who's building them.

Have you ever priced a custom acoustic? 800 for a production model is a steal, especially for something that you won't find anywhere else like an 8 string acoustic.

one nit-to-pick: That's a semi-12 string (has two double courses), not an eight single-courses stringed guitar.

$800 is too much for a production 8 string steel string acoustic with a built in pickup, might as well spec out my own custom acoustic and spend $4500+ (likely far into "+" territory) even without a pickup.
    Makes sense.

 I imagine you're making some luthiers a lot of money.

yeah, $800 is not very much at all for an acoustic, canadian or american. or even 800 euros.

I'd definitely be interested - are you aiming at a particular sound? IE Taylor-like or Martin-like?
