So, I’m kind of on a Periphery kick lately. If you’ve been replying to my recent posts, you’ve probably noticed. So the question is simple. How do I get the Periphery debut album tone? Or atleast as close as I can get. Here are the “conditions”.

-I can get hold of any guitar around 3-4 grand.
-I’m getting an Axe-Fx II soon.
    Thanks for any input.

    That was pre-Porsche Misha IIRC...

So, BRJ through a 5150 in your bedroom?

I wonder what pickups were in his BRJ 7 guitar.

After the album came out Misha was using his Invader live, I think Alex and Jake were both using Rectifiers, but the album itself I thought was either POD or Axe.

He definitely didn't have his BRJ yet. His Blackmachine was all over the first album though.

First album was Axe-Fx Ultra. 4 x 12 German Cab and the FAS Modern amp I think.

7 string songs were recorded with an Ernie Ball JP7 with the custom dimarzio set that was before the Crunch Lab and Liquifire. The 6 string songs were recorded using a Blackmachine B6 that had a Cold Sweat Bridge and Painkiller Neck. Some solos and clean parts may have been tracked with the Blackmachine on the 7 string songs.

When the band is now using Jackson, PRS and Ibanez guitars equipped with Bare Knuckles, Dimarzios and Seymour Duncans then what guitar and pickup you use doesn't really matter. The Axe-FX II will get the tone you want. Just buy a good hi-end guitar with "modern" sounding pickups and you're sorted.

There is some debate as to the cab and mic but the essence of the tone is a TS-boosted FAS Modern.

I had always heard it was the German cab and when I used to mess around I could get my tone very close using that and I think a 121 and 57 mics in my axefx.

Also, I’m pretty sure Misha at one point said it was the German can. I dunno, that was a long ass time ago.

any modeler - gate > compressor > TS > gate > 5150 (although Misha used Engl Powerball at that time, so you might want to try some Engl simulation) > gate > 4x12 v30 cab

or something like that..they used triple gate setup with real amps/pedals. which they tried to replicate when it came to digital realm. then they realized it's overkill to use three gates as there is not so much noise with digital rig, also compressor for heavy tones is not necessary (noise increase, to easy to play). so I would go with:
    TS > 5150 > gate > 4x12 v30 cab

right hand is more important than the gear they used.

Just remember to put a pre- and post-EQ and boost around the 1000-1500Hz range like 30dBs.

So, would you guys prefer getting the ENGL Misha used or an Axe-FX II? Oh and any kind of explanation for those custom dimarzios in Bulbs JP7? Similar Set etc.

So did they use the 5150’s power amp section for the Axe-FX?

Before Petrucci had signature pickups in his guitars, they shipped with "custom Dimarzios" then eventually a D-Sonic and custom neck, and finally the list of signature pickups. Probably pretty close to the Crunchlab and Liquifire.

he means in a modeler use that signal chain

Honestly just grab a used Axe FX Ultra or 2, hell even a Pod X3 will do, might sound more like *Vintage* djent though
