ok so my bud is a pedal builder and has a preamp pedal of the VH140. I’m gonna do some vids for him... problem is I’m pretty unfamiliar with the amp.

Am I right that Cannibal Corpse used these on early recordings? Any pointers to some standout recordings of any kind with this amp would help.

Definitely not in the death metal realm, but I think Kamelot's Karma was done with one.

    Thanks man! Will do!

Oh cool! Good to know as I’d like to show it in different applications.

Going to use my Quilter OD200 for Power since these amps are Solid State.

All the classic Mortal Decay songs are VH140c or VH150. Also Immolation - Dawn Of Possession. I believe it is also on every Internal Bleeding record, Guy Marchais also used these amps when he was in Pyrexia.

Decapitated’s Winds of Creation and I think Nihility too.

The first couple Nile albums too, I think.

    Such a brutal tone...

Dunno any albums, but Mark Klöppel used one for Misery Index. In fact he helped design the Amptweaker Tightmetal using the 5150 and a VH140C as a basis

I think he used a 5153 on the Killing Gods at least. There's a gear rundown where they mention he used that and a mystery amp, so maybe the Ampeg is the mystery amp. I'd like to think he used the Tight Metal into the power section of something and miced it up.

New Pig Destroyer uses the pedal.

When it comes to guitars, amps, and pedals, is there anything new that you've been using on this album?
"Well, I did use the preamp/pedal that I've been using for a couple of years now. Scot DeBockler over at S&K Pedals developed the VHD pedal, which models the circuit of the VH-140c Ampeg Solid State head. Those fans who have followed my gear-headed adoration of this head and its brothers know that I tracked down the original engineer of that head, Thom Kieffer, and had him autograph the Crate descendant version of it around 2003 or so.

"Scot has done an amazing job getting the entire thing into a pedal. So I was excited to use it for the record. Will Putney (our mixing/mastering engineer) wound up reamping some of the DI tracks to blend in his choice of sounds too, which I believe included a VHT Pitbull, a Bogner Ubershall, a 5150 and a PRS Archon. So the tone is all that mixed together somehow."
