I drove to south Austin today with my friend and he bought a used ESP Telecaster off a guy who had posted it on Craigslist. It looked/played nice and all the electronics worked, but neither of us still really knows much about the guitar. The guy he bought it from said the guitar was made in the mid 80's and it probably had Dimarzios based on the looks, but wasn't sure.

Does anyone know anything about these guitars as far as pickups, woods, and years of production? I'd email ESP about this with the serial number first, but the guitar is back with my friend.

Here are a few pictures he sent me. If it helps, the color is actually a dark trans blue and it has a vintage style tremolo and a V-shaped neck profile. Thanks!

    Probably Dimarzio's.

    Cool as fucking hell though.

^I figured as much. My guess is a Super Distortion bridge and some sort of PAF in the neck.

He's really happy with the guitar so far, especially since he got it for $575 and I've seen other 80's ESP's go for well over $1000.

Can you tell what the headstock used to say?

Owner here, decided to make an account because I'm pretty anxious to find out what I have.
The head stock is very worn out, you can tell the last three letters end in -ies

It's an ESP 400 Series Tele.

With ya on that one, although I don't think I've ever seen a dual hum ESP Tele. Very cool! The old 400 Series and Traditionals from the 80's are SO awesome!

Yeah, that's why I'm kinda thinking otherwise... Unless it was a semi-custom since ESP also made parts at the time.

Those dual humbucker teles had "the eclipse" on the headstock, but I've never seen one with a maple neck, all I've seen were black all over with an ebony board and the lettering in white.
Funny how Eclipse ended up as being the LP model. ^^

Oh shit, now I remember that. One of my friends has one, it's Wine Red with a matching Wine Red fretboard and headstock. Kind of ugly but plays like butter!

    Damn that looks slick!

On a somewhat related note, my friend and I have come to the conclusion that his guitar most likely has a "parts" or afermarket ESP body with a regular 400 series neck since we haven't been able to find another dual humbucker tele body in that finish.

I was looking through my ESP catalogs, and I noticed something...

Your guitar looks like the one in the bottom-right corner. It may be an early 80's Eclipse body with a 400-series neck.

Wow, my friends Eclipse looked like that? It's literally Wine Red like a Les Paul now lol

Man that's sick! It's pretty crazy how the Eclipse series ended up being their LP style guitar later on.

Probably the closest you could get to Devin Townsend's old ESP Tele! I love it!
