I'd love to buy a 2nd 8-string later this year or next year, amazing there is such choice these days!! Feel free to add more & share ur experiences with these brands.

So far my dream guitars would be an Aristides or Daemoness.
In reality if I could do semi-custom I'd consider Balaguer, Mayones, Badstroke.
Maybe off the rack an Abasi?

I'm interested in getting Bare Knuckle Pickups - what do u enjoy in the 8-string range for prog rock/metal style playing?

    In no particular order :

    Off The Rack

    ESP LTD
    Ibanez
    Schecter
    Harley Benton

Cut out Halo guitars and Ormsby. I've heard nothing but horror stories of their custom shop stuff. I've also heard of some people having issues with Guerilla.

I can personally recommend Knightro guitars.
Andrew at Knightro is super friendly and he makes a big point of communicating as much as possible (something that is sorely lacking in the builder community). Plus his work is excellent and he delivered both of my guitars within his expected build time (which was about 4 months back then).

I have a pair of custom Schecter 8-strings. They are flawless, and you can spec exactly what you want. Even if they haven't done it before, they'll figure it out and do it.

I’ve just received my Sub Zero fanned 7 and it’s good bang for the buck.
Considering the price, it’s pretty good specs and plays well :)

You can knock daemoness off that list also, no more custom orders

If your dream guitar is an Aristides, and you are ready to shell out for a Mayones, why not go for the Aristides? Or maybe I just misunderstood...

Oni Guitars is worth a look for a custom 8 String. Personally, I really enjoy my Strandberg 8......but I'm a fanboi and there's lots of h8rs out there.

Are you really considering a Rick Toone type price?

How are the Schecter necks? I was looking at them but read somewhere they are a bit on the thick side, which is fine for some folks but I like a slim neck.

No not considering. Just wanted to make a list of all the 8-string guitar providers I could find so far. I find it helpful & hope other will to, having a list all in one place.

There really isn't that much of a difference indeed. Both are great too, it just depends on what you are going for. If it's your dream guitar, go for it!

Anything SLS or KM from Schecter will be Ibanez thin, but with a C profile rather than a flat D. They are really great if you like that sort of thing. The quality on them is also superb for the price. The SLS Elite line is amazing value in my opinion.

The custom shop will do whatever dimensions you want. My guitar necks are moderately thick and somewhat wide, with carbon reinforcements, because I ordered them that way. I'm sure they will do whatever dimensions you request.

you have kiesel in the "off the rack" list but not "custom" list...

those are very customizable builds and are pretty great imo unless you are specifically looking to buy an in stock instrument. not to mention hard to beat value-wise and returnable to boot unless you get one of the explicitly called out non-returnable options.

if Aristides is your "dream guitar" - but "in reality" you're considering a Mayo - not clear on the logic there tbh, Aristides are cheaper and I think have a shorter wait time rn.

That's news to me about Ormsby. Is it just the full customs or the import "Run" models as well? Cause I've heard good things, assuming you're fine with the wait or buy from their Reverb stock.

+1 for Schecter's necks. Every electric I have save for one is a Schecter. The other one is a semicustom from Oakland Axe Factory (SS8 Shorty), but IDK if he still makes stuff.

As far as custom makers, I'd add on Red Layer out of Amsterdam and Equilibrium out of Boston. Not to mention both are really good social-media wise, so you'll automatically get progress pics and stuff.

Most of the issues plaguing ormsby's custom stuff is piss poor communication, and very nebulous wait times ( with some guys waiting multiple years before their builds get started) from what I've been told. Quality seems fine from what I've heard but there are a number of other builders I'd choose first in that price point that actually give a shit about deadlines and communication.
The import run stuff is solid quality ime but I've had to wait 1-2 years for both of the runs I was in, so I can't recommend that route tbh. If you can score a spare from a run off reverb or via a dealer then they're worth it imo.

Yeah, been going round in. circles for a few months so I think I got confused with the pricing. Kinda of why I made the list - to review & keep my head straight. Thanks for pointing that out! Good catch.
