Looking some the right gauge to avoid string flap. Currently have the D'Addario Baritone light set but they're too floppy. Tuned to Drop A.

    Any string suggestions?

use a string tension calculator and figure it out. 17 lbs tension is usually a good starting point.

Got some of the EB with the 72 and it’s much better. A lot better than the DA

My 27" 7-string came with a 59 as the low string. It was ok for A-standard but about as light as I could ever comfortably play. The old tension calculator says that would be about 15.5lbs.

For contrast, a normal 9-gauge set on a 25.5" tuned to E-standard works out at about 18.5lbs.

To match that tension you need a 64 gauge string on a 27" neck, and that's what I did. It plays well, no flap. I think 68 would be a bit too toight for me, but 62 or 64 works great.

This. Getting a separate string for the low A is the only solution.

    Ever played a bass?

Yep single low A or shopping from custom brands like myself, Stringjoy, or String Source. D'addario 13-62 (B standard) set with the 62 swapped for a 70 is a nice off the shelf solution. The EB 13-72 will work as you've found but it's way tighter than needs to be in the middle, because it's gauged for heavy standard (like A standard) rather than only beefing up the bottom string. 70 or 72 is a perfect match for your more typical 46 36 26 middles when in a drop tuning. 56 E is very excessive and way tighter than a 72 A.

Yes I own two. Im speaking in terms of chording over long periods of time for guitar riffs.... I have a SRC6 as well, I personally had alot if discomfort after just 20 mins if playing that stock. Using those guages for a Bass is not the same thing as chording or riffing on those guages on a guitar.

Im using Stringjoy 12-58 and am tuned to Drop Ab or Drop A on my 27" Baritone tele with P90s and it works fine. I dig that they are balanced tension.

I think I can move up to a .135 - .62. The stock .14 -.68 were a bit too beefy (and I am not fan of Fender strings), but these 12's are plenty slinky and I can do crazy bends with them.

    I'm a really huge fan of the GHS low tuned series (10-60, 11-53, & 11-70) on my 27" 6-string.

I can't post a link, yet, but there is some really good info on them on their website.
