I am looking at Kiesel, Hapas, Ran and Knightro so far, and want to ask for further recommendations. My Price range is under $2000.

hapas, knightro and ran will definitely run you over 2k unless you already got quotes from them saying otherwise.
Kiesel is really the only viable option at that price range.
Unless you're looking for very particular wood choices/specs, don't go custom.

Knightro said he can do a basic setup for $1800. Standards woods and stuff. Kiesel is a good choice too. I just want to go custom for quality, and a specific color/wood setup

both are solid brands ime (I own multiple guitars from both). It's more a matter of what kind of experience you want. Knightro is really good about doing mockups/sending pics and emails during the build process and helping you get exactly what you want. Kiesel doesn't do that (because they have significantly higher amounts of guitars that they're working on at any one time) and you'll basically be sitting there with your fingers crossed hoping you get exactly what you envisioned your guitar looking like.

Actually it was your 8 string Pioneer that turned me onto Knightro. It looks sick. Also, he seems like a good dude, and was very quick to respond to me. Im leaning toward Knightro a lot because of his transparency, and willingness to respond quickly

This is click bait. You title should read under $2000. i was expecting coming in this thread to talk about the full list of custom builder names. For this price maybe the Kiesel is the best option, or buy used or the PRS SE line and have money left over

Ok, not my intention for click bait.

it is indeed a sick guitar. Easily my favorite 8 string that I've owned, more so than my kiesels or overload (which are all great guitars, but the pioneer just has some magic mojo to it  ). Knightro was really good about taking any feedback/issues I had with my first build (namely the fret ends were kind of sharp and the fingerboard shrunk a bit) and fixing them for all future builds. He put a blind slot fretboard on the pioneer and it's now a standard feature on all his guitars iirc. The pioneer basically came out perfect other than some very very minor scratches on the top (which you can't even see unless you're like an inch away from the top or use a magnifying glass).
I really like his work/designs and he's got great customer service so I have no problem recommending him.

Brian Howard of Howard Guitars is building me a 7-string Stratty thing (of course). This is the first full custom guitar I’ve order from him, but he’s done repair and modding work for years on several guitars for me and is awesome.

Depending on what you want he might be able to get under $2k. Worth asking.

Skip Hapas. Hes drastically behind on build times, and everything I've seen leave his shop lately is covered in tool marks.

Add an extra $1000 to your budget at minimum if you're going to go custom.
