1x12 speaker cab recommendations

So I've mostly been recording direct lately and I have a gigantic Recto OS 4x12 here that I barely get to use. It's gratifying on the rare occasions I get to use it, but it's kinda dumb to have this gigantic 100+ pound behemoth taking up a ton of space in my studio when I don't actually use it for anything. It looks cool af but I'd rather transform it into some different gear.

I want to downsize - a lot. Even 2x12s are too heavy for how lazy I am now.

Does anybody make a competent 1x12? Something that doesn't sound like a tiny box, like the 1x12 version of a Mesa OS cab?

Empty seismic cab (the close backed one) and your speaker of choice. I have one with an Eminence g12 in it and I love it.



Only an option in the US tho. Maybe Canada.

Mesa makes a 1x12 Rectifier cab that isn't the "mini" version, though they're less common on the used market than the mini. It's 1/4 the internal volume of the 4x12 Recto and has the same V30, so it should give you the best approximation of your existing 4x12 sound in a 1x12 enclosure.

I've always been partial to Avatar cabs. Their G112 signature is a redesign of the Contemporary which IIRC is oversized and you can pick your speaker. Only $88 more for the 212, so it doesn't seem like a great value.

I’m currently using an Orange PPC112 and I can’t recommend it high enough. Amazing quality and sound.

I used to also have a Mesa TransAtlantic 112 cab and that was also excellent for the price! Can’t say enough good things about that cab!

What wattage amp? That's usually the big limiter

I use a Marshall 1912 - amp is a Mesa Simul-class 2:90. The cab is rated at 150w. Second-hand only now, I believe and looking to get a second one to muck about with stereo and wet/dry.

I used a Friedman 1x12 briefly and was stunned at how big it sounded. I assume it’s similar to the Bogner cube.

What wattage amp? That's usually the big limiter

one's 60 watts, one's 100. but I run an attenuator usually and wattage only comes into it when you have something absolutely cranked

I usually recommend a Thiele 100% of the time...

But in a recording scenario I would go a different way.
In fact, nothing ported.

You'll find a Mesa Recto 1x12 v30 loaded in many a closet with a mic fixed in front of it untouched for years.
