NOTE: This is my first build/modification, and I know it isn't perfect, but I hope you guys like it anyway, and I will try to make this guitar even better soon :)

So...I was bored yesterday and I thought: "I wonder if I can turn a 12 string acoustic guitar into a working 7 string acoustic?"

I started by putting a set of seven strings on it, and spacing them evenly on the tuners, the neck, and the bridge. The neck was JUST BARELY wide enough to hold all 7 strings comfortably. After doing that, I cut new indentions into the bridge and the top of the neck to keep the strings in place under tension, and then I marked them. All in all, it took about 4 hours to get it just right, and I gotta say, I'm very pleased with the result. It plays and sounds really freakin' good. And considering that extended range acoustics (7, 8, 9, and 10 string) can cost thousands of dollars, I'd say that modifying this guitar was a pretty good budget alternative.

    I love building/modifying stuff :D

For this, I'm using a D'Addario 7 string electric set (they were just a pack of strings that I had laying around...I'll probably put some custom gauge Acoustic strings on it soon). The gauges are: .010, .013, .017, .026, .036, .046, .059

To answer your other question: Man, the low B sounds magnificent! And if you put it in Drop A, you can really fill out those big chords :D

This is awesome! Does that high B sit well? it looks pretty bent. Make a new nut with correct string spacing and remove the extra tuners and this will be perfect.

It sits quite well actually (as well as a bent string can sit haha). I will definitely be modding this guitar more, and I'll definitely do those couple of things you suggested.

    Thanks for the advice man!

I would really like to do this sometime. I've always wanted a 7-string acoustic, but they are rare to find within my price range.

    Nice job. :hbang:

I don't think you wrapped the low B string enough times. :D

Just curious, but why didn't you use the other tuner for the low B? It looks like that one would give you a straight pull on the string.

I think it was because I was just being dumb lol. When I restring it, I'll definitely put it through the lowest tuner :D

Definitely looks like a fun project, specially since the pawn shops in my area constantly have 12 string guitars for under $200
