I have an RG1570 that has a weird rattling sound coming from the locking nut when I play the open low E and also on a lot of fretted...
Pretty much the whole of the Garage Inc. album by Metallica... every time I hear one of the originals it just doesn't sound right to me.
If it's not recessed just tighten the springs until it's flat on the body.

WD40 usually works pretty good for rust IME.
80 grit sandpaper and a lot of elbow grease. Good luck!
