I guess. Outside of music I'm a bit of a home body. I've got a new band going. I get to see my kids regularly. I quit drinking, but there's a local pub that I hang out at some. Play some table top and some Magic. The local music scene is mostly Nu-Metal, Pop Punk, and Cajunto. But I'm an hour from Austin where there's a lot of music happening.

Sounds like there's a fair bit of stuff there. Do you get much opportunity to do music?
Congrats on quitting drinking. That usually seems like a helpful step.
Do you make models for your tabletop games?
Did you get to any performances in SXSW?

We rehearse once or twice a week. Still writing new material. We don't have enough for a set list yet. I wasn't an Alcoholic. I'm just trying to be more healthy. I've made some models in the past, I haven't in a long time. They can be fun, but I'm not a huge fan of the painting of tiny things.

I end up more frustrated than satisfied. I've been to SXSW before. It was an experience for sure. I like ACL better generally. SXSW has become gentrified and they'll take legal action sometimes if you play a show a fair bit of time in either direction from the two week festival sometimes anywhere within like 50 miles. I could get my band on a showcase stage there probably. I went to ACM in the US.

They have a showcase there most years. In addition, they help to host a music festival a few blocks from the school and another about 30 miles from the school at different times of the year. It's more about being prepared when an opportunity like that presents itself.

There's two cities at around 2 million people each less than an hour from each other, another at around 4 million about three hours away, and a fourth at around 7 million 5 hours away. There's a lot of opportunity to be heard. Honestly, I'm more focused on the getting out and playing than the going to other shows, outside some bigger name things that I haven't yet seen.

I've got an Oni on order that I'm trying to not lose my mind about waiting for. What's the music scene like where you're at?

Even just stopping drinking socially for health reasons can be tough. The amount of social pressure to drink, or difficulty to find and be in social situations without alcohol can be difficult.
Yeah, I don't have the patience for model making, myself. I have a few friends who do but I'd find it pretty frustrating, too.

Ah, the corporatisation of music festivals. That does sound annoying. Is the music scene still solid outside of SXSW season?
A pal of mine was on a few showcases at SXSW this year. Kapil Seshasayee is his name. He's getting quite a bit of publicity at the moment, which is nice.
I've never heard of ACM. Does it specialise in or exclude particular kinds of music, or is it quite well rounded?

That's great that they hold a few events. When's the next one that they're putting on? Do you think you'll have time to complete some stuff to perform? With that many people nearby, it doesn't seem like there'll be any shortage of opportunities when you're at that stage. :)

Ooh, what do you have specced for the Oni? I love their stuff. Some of my favourite designs, by far.

Scotland is tiny so we have a pretty skewed perspective. We get frustrated about having to go to Glasgow which is an hour away. The transport isn’t that well set up to support it, though. Like you need to leave before the end of a set to make it back for the last train to Edinburgh, which is a pain.

There's lots of wee shows on which is good. I've been trying to get out to more local shows to support the grassroots scene. We have some decent bands but because Scotland is so small, a lot of the same bands end up playing a bit too much.

I've wanted to get an improvisational hardcore group going for a few years but it's been impossible to find the right people for that as most people like to have a fixed way that a song is played and stick to that, rather than having any undefined elements.

Austin ALWAYS has music happening. Its one of the big US cities that are well known for music. Basically, Nashville, Memphis, New York, L.A., New Orleans, Chicago, Seattle, Atlanta, and Austin. Dallas also has a big music scene, but it isn't very widely known as a music industry town.

ACM (Academy of Contemporary Music) is actually a British school. The original is in Guildford. The manager of The Flaming Lips hooked up with them and brought a franchise to the US. I can't even comment how many times I've partied with Wayne Coyne.

Curriculum is solid. Lots of technique, and theory. Tons of performance, which I'd say is probably the most important part. I'd say its not dissimilar to Berklee or MI. I've got a two year, and I'm a few credits shy on a four year. I'll finish eventually.

Its hard to support a local scene when you're aren't much into what it offers. I'll be 39 in about a month. IT career. Kids. Having time to get to shows I'm not playing is a pain. Though I should further explore the local scene.

I think its difficult to get anything improvisational together. Most players are honestly in it because they want to relax and not think about it. Its a tough sell to get anyone on board with improvisation when their roots are punk/metal.

Its difficult to get a jam band or jazz person on board with heavy music. Especially when crazy extended chord harmony is just going to make the music sound confusing. I'm probably going to put together a jazzy thing too. Just to push myself and to do something that will offer regular money. Maybe a Jazz/rock fusion thing.

The Oni is an 8 string Essi with the e-scale. Dan's picking the neck wood. Body wood is Australian Blackwood. Fretboard I think is Ovankol. He mentioned a synthetic fretboard, like richlite, which I'd be fine with. But I don't think they make blanks big enough.

I'm doing a painted top. I don't generally like guitars that look like coffee tables.
