You have to play jazz, blues, rock, and metal....with one guitar. Choose wisely.

You are going to play nightly gigs and you are only allowed one guitar. It must not only pull off convincing tones for each genre (jazz, blues, classic rock, 80s hard rock, modern metal), but must also look reasonably appropriate. What do you choose?

my 8 string tele with push pull coil taps for both pickups. I can get spanky tele tones, chimey strat cleans, savage metal tones and anything in between.

The new Ibanez AZ series look promising. Other than that, I'd go for [enter number of strings] strat/tele/LP style guitar, HH layout with a creative wiring, including coil split on both pickups individually. I'd also look for medium output pickups, so they won't be too much screaming when doing jazzy stuff and as for metal, one can always gain up the settings...

My personal inclination has always been if you can only have one guitar it needs to be a standard tele. I've never had any problem getting any kind of tone out of those. YMMV.

my PRS Experience Singlecut Trem. With the right amp it can get quite versatile.

I'd always choose my Oni. If it had to be a production guitar, though, I'd say go for a Parker Fly (except those are no longer in production) - they're very versatile.

I'm surprised nobody has said it yet but the answer really should just be whichever guitar you like the most. A guitar isn't tied to a genre. Sorry for being that guy. Basically any comfortable guitar with decent passives and a coil split switch will be capable of some variation of any tone, give or take some pedals.

This. If you listen to Baddest of the Bad by Reverend Horton Heat, there is a short passage of pure black metal blast beat madness straight off of Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk played on a Gretsch hollowbody through a Fender amp and an upright bass! So I went to GC and put a Brian Setzer model through a Fender Hot Rod and started annoying everyone with loud metal riffage. I loved it. It played great!

I always wanted to be in a band all dressed up like Behemoth or Immortal with black pointy guitars and play like some old 50s slowdance prom songs. Or country. Like super grim kvlt covntry!

I would probably say something in the Prs custom 24 style with good quality medium output pups.
