So for whatever reason the previous owner of my Daemoness Chronicler didn’t see fit to comission it without locking tuners.

If it doesn’t have a Floyd it’s got to have locking tuners, but I’ve never had to actually choose a set to retrofit on to guitar that doesn’t have them.

3x3’s, a good ratio and great quality. What do I get? Also black.

I'm pretty partial to the hipshot tuners, though the graphtech ones are super high quality and have a progressive tuning ratio (I have a set on one of my warmoth baritones and they're awesome).

I can tell you what not to get. I was attracted to the generic China ones because they were dirt cheap. After waiting for a more than a month wait, it turned out being useless. It cuts strings when I start locking them.

However, I heard genuine JinHo wants are good, and costs less than the known branded ones.

Either hipshots or schaller. I really like the little easy install brackets hipshots come with. In case the current mounting holes don't match up, you can use the brackets to install the tuners with zero modification/drilling.

I have Sperzel tuners on one guitar, and they are good tuners for being 12:1, but it's made me realize that I definitely prefer 18:1 tuners, which Sperzel doesn't make. Also I should mention that I once got the doll pin stuck in the up position. I had to screw the back all the way off and tap it out, put it back in and it works just fine, but yeah idk I guess that's less than ideal right? But let me also tell you that Sperzel are the only locking tuners I've ever used, ever. All the rest of my tuners are normal ones. But now that I have them, oh man locking tuners is where it's at. I would get them for all my guitars if it weren't for the money and effort. Actually who knows maybe I will!

I've always been interested to try the planet waves locking tuners that actually cut the strings. That seems really convenient. Anyone know much about them? Does that automatic string cutting system work pretty well?

I really like the Gotoh Magnum Locks I have on two of my guitars. They come in black and cosmo, as well as gold. The staggered post heights works well on my 3x3 Talman headstock, so it doesn't need a string tree even though the headstock isn't angled. I like them enough I'd get another set so all my Prestiges have them.

Does the Gotoh tuners come in all black? All the photos I ever see they have the Gold button in the locks.

yeah Ive had this issue before haha.

You can take the locking wheel out and smooth off any sharp parts of it to make sure there isnt such a pronounced sharp edge "clamping" the string. Its the only way around it really.

my issue normally with cheap tuners is how they all feel like different tightness's to each other. I cant stand that. And they wont "tighten" either if you are trying to sort out loose buttons etc.

I like the looks, feel, and ratio of the Hipshot locking tuners best. I have a few sets of the open back locking tuners and they’re fantastic. Though the Sperzels work really well too, I just need to be patient with fine tuning. My other locking tuners are Fender, PRS and Kiesel which would not make sense on your guitar

You'll want to check two things: the hole size for your existing tuners, and if your existing tuners have a screw hole that would be exposed when you install whatever new tuners you install.

I only use Gotoh 510s or Hipshots these days. Sperzel and Planet Waves are mechanically not on the same level. Schaller is OK, but too heavy...

I replaced the stock tuners on my Ibanez RG1451 with these and have had no problems. Super simple to use and didn't require any drilling. String cutting feature works perfectly. I suspect the Planet Waves are actually rebranded Gotoh's as the same tuners came stock on my SV5470 (albeit with slightly different buttons)...

My Parker has Sperzels which work fine but I don't particularly like the design of the thumbwheel.

Personal favourites are the Schallers on my EBMM JP's.

Had a guitar with the Planet Waves tuners. They worked great and looked great. Nothing to complain about. They also cut the string, making it look all nice and perfect.
