I loved that Enciclopaedia Metallum web and used it almost everyday, I love the album critics for every band, the info that provided and every time I heard of a new interesting band, it was there but now there are almost no critics and such. Is that because of general lack of interest in metal in the last years or am I missing something?

It's just a decline in traffic and content contributions to sites like these. People on phones are much less likely to use sites like this which has caused them to fall behind on info. It's the same with Wikipedia, new albums but big bands come out and there is barely any info or isn't even a page sometimes.

It's happening across the net, look at tab sites, there is a fraction of tabs uploaded nowadays. Forums are dying too which is a real shame.

For that site's forums in particular, it was like someone turned off the faucet one day. I remember when it used to see a pile of traffic, then it all just seemed to slow to a trickle almost instantly.

No toontrack metal month thread on the andy sneap forums shows just how much forums are fading.

I think part of it is that a lot of PHPBB forums are completely unusable on phones. Like, you have to zoom way, way in to click on the correct page number of a thread or to choose "new posts." This one is better than a lot of them.

Wasn't that the site where local bands nobody gave a shit about made pages to link to their MySpace, to look more legitimate?

You'd be surprised. People who updated and used that site are hawks. I never once touched my band's page, but somehow if someone played one show in my band it'd be up there. So apparently more people give a shit than I would have thought.
I did catch one dude I didn't like, who never actually made it in the band, had listed himself as "touring bassist" which was a solid sign to nix him from my life. Other than that, it was just people who might have cared too much updating it, but shows that the site and its contents definitely matter to a number of people.

And the place where crappy musicians who didn't get into local bands nobody cared about would go to write really bad reviews of the bands' recordings.

Those were the days, as well as the BTBAM subforum. The amount of personal memes created there before memes were even a thing is astounding.

Ditto. I've felt this way for a while but this thread highlights it.

Forums are dying because social media and memes are apparently more fulfilling to the majority of online users these days. Truly is sad, I started my internet journey on forums like metaltabs and harmony central, had conversations with so many great people and I think that's largely due to the fact that a forum is a collection of individuals that are all gathering in one place to discuss a specific interest. So, the level of trolling was much less and it wasn't just a general chat forum/social media where any bored asshat that has no interest in the discussion can scroll through a page and post their shitty, unsolicited opinion.

    The internet was so cool..

I think this forum is still a great place for metalheads. Not perfect, but nothing is.

Wow, I didn't want to provoke so much sadness with this thread.

So the answer to my question is .... because of fricking mobile phones, metal snobbism and nobody caring anymore about guitars?

    Look on the bright side.

Communities like this, and MA, came about because how small and poorly served they were. We just didn't have any other place to talk about super niche guitars.

But now, there are so many more outlets and communities and that's not exactly a bad thing.
