I'm not a US citizen (British) but I something resonates with me about the story of the Indy. It's story both courageous and scandalous in equal measure, IMO. Kinda glad it has been found.

I remember reading about that, hundreds of men stranded for days, floating in the water, their numbers slowly being picked off by the circling sharks... Absolutely horrifying.

I'm at work, someone else should embed the scene from Jaws.

That is a terrifying prospect but it should also be pointed out that far more men were dying of exposure and dehydration. It wasn't sharks eating hundreds of guys like the Jaws story spun it.

While this is true, I am WAY more afraid of dying of shark attack than I am of dying of exposure.

That any survived is miraculous. The initial explosion of torpedo impact, the ship underwater in minutes, the sharks, the exposure, the kidney failures due to ingesting high quantities of salt water, THE GREY LIFE JACKETS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PACIFIC, the loss of mental faculties, the cold in the night...

That they were spotted at all is utterly amazing. Not a traditional view of 'heroic', but surviving that event in such a hostile environment - I salute you, brave men.

That your government treated you and your captain with such contempt - shame.

If you were really dying of exposure, you'd wish a shark would come and take you.

The fact there are no surviver accounts of people TRYING to get eaten by a shark kinda calls that into question, and anyway, if I was really dying of a shark attack, I'd wish to have died by exposure instead. That doesn't really prove anything.

@r33per - my government has done some pretty shitty things over the years, things that this pales in comparison to. Doesn't make it right, of course, just that I'm afraid it's hardly out of character.

You guys invented scotch, though. I'll forgive a lot for that. Of course, we invented bourbon, so...

Yeah what they did to the commander was horrible. Usually whenever the one person takes responsibility they're one of the least responsible and used as a scapegoat by those truly responsible in order to escape from being held responsible.

    Responsible.
