So, as some of the fellows on chat know, I picked up this flying V for $25 shipped from AzCat over on Harmony Central. Its what you might call a project.

Here are the plans so far:
    Fill the floyd route
Finish filling the neck pup route
Fill the 5 way and knobs hole
Get a top mount hardtail bridge (you'll see why in the pics)
Repaint. I'm thinking a flat black would do this one good.

Right now, here is how it sits:

The sides/back are begging to me to have the whole thing done in a distressed finish that shows off that grain.

Spent a couple hours today, still can't really tell I did anything haha

Cocaine is one hell of a drug. I eyeballed the neck and I didn't notice anything.

Hopefully I can do this american made beauty some justice. What would you do with it, keeping in mind its really more of a solid color project?

I do think that would definitely give it a distressed look haha. If it didn't have the trem route half done and the control cavity messed up it would be a decent candidate for a blacktop sort of thing.

Anyone have thoughts on the best way to preserve the serial number and the made in usa stamps? I thought about making them deeper or just taping them off when I paint it. Not really sure how I'd make them deeper without ruining the integrity of them.

For the serial numbers, just gently block sand over them, but dont go very deep. You don't need a whole lot of depth.

For the stamps.... "sorry", theres no good way to preserve them. while refinishing.

When you get tired of this project, lemme know, and I'll throw you some cash ;) haha

Flying V's always looked better in white to me, personally, but a matte black finish with some deep red stripes or binding would look KILLER!!!

What the fuck happened to this Gibson?!??!

It can be saved, black or all white will look good.

Right now I'm thinking ferrari red or a pearl white might be nice. Its going to be a game time decision on the color I think. I might try to do a mock up later of what an end product might be like, depends how start up repair works out :noway:

Update pics coming soon, but its not much to look at still.

hahaha cool. What the HELL did you use for wood glue?! lol

Good thing about gibson projects... If you do a great job, you restored a classic to great shape. If you do a shitty job, you've restored to as new from factory shape ;)

I used titebond orignal to glue in the filler pieces, and titebond original mixed with sawdust to try to fill in where the prevous owner beveled the cavities.

I hope she turns out alright. So many holes in it! If the top keeps it's figure do a translucent amber finish :)

I swear I've done more stuff to it, but it still looks about the same, haha. Anywho here is a update I guess. I've filled the beveled cavities, the control holes, and the neck and bridge pickup holes the rest of the way. No pics of the back atm, but its about done too. Anyone else think the tuner holes are vintage size? They look like it to me. After i get the front all leveled it should be ready for paint.
