I was at a local shop and one of the employees suggested a Blackstar amp to another customer. After a couple minutes I had to wander over and see what he was playing through. It was an ID:260 TVP and it sounded awesome. I've never paid much attention to Blackstar but that definitely made me take notice. I guess these have been around for quite a few years now? Anyway, I'm tempted to grab one of those to replace my Katana 50.

I saw there's also a 60W (and 100W) head, but I'm not sure if those are still being distributed. Anyone have experience with these TVP models? What do you like/dislike?

I was originally interested for the power tube modelling aspect. But I think you're better off with your Katana. There's some things where they missed with them. Plus unless I'm wrong about the 50 you have the Katanas have loop and midi options more flexible than the TVP heads.

Unfortunately the Katana 50 doesn’t have a loop. I took a peek at the Blackstar forums and it looks like you can use the Blackstar software to enable an effects loop function using the line in and the emulated out. Very cool if so.

I played through the ID:260 a bit today and ended up going for it lol. The fucking GAS got me again. Shocking. Anyway I do think I like it better than the Katana...at least for now. We will see how I feel in a week.

    Well that escalated quickly!

So I’m curious about these, too. Can you get a really tight, dry, modern metal sound out of this? With the TVP allowing you to pick the power tube emulation, I would think you could get a pretty cool sound dialed in, and sound like a modern metal amp.

All of my experiences with the tvp stuff has been positive. I do't know why its even an option to turn it off though, or why it just isn't on automatically when you turn on the amp. The 6l6 setting is fucking brutal \m/

I miss mine but it went to an old friend in a touring band (Anti Clone) who uses it and loves it immensely.
So at least its new owner is getting the most from it.

I was underwhelmed at the time BUT....I never tried it through a 4x12 for normal shows/practices (other than when I used it to play Bloodstock festival through a full stack and it sounded soo good) so used its sale to fund a Kemper instead.

its features are great, it has a Efx loop if activated via software, its effects are great, its banks/patch saving is also really cool. Why anyone would turn off their TVP I dont know because off its alot quieter and shitter sounding.

    WARNING
do NOT, even by accident, plug the footswitch into anything other than the footswitch input. I did by accident one time and the pedal stopped working straight away and I needed a replacement. It fried it and it only uses a normal guitar lead cable so was an easy mistake to make.

Yeah I think so. I’m curious about using an OD in front. I’ll check later. I just picked up another amp...

Hmm, never heard of their TVP stuff before, but it's intriquing. Few demos I watched of it sounded pretty good! So is it really loud like a tube equivalent? That's the one thing thats hard to convey on Youtube.

Yeah it definitely gets loud like a tube amp. But take that with a grain of salt because it might be smoke and mirrors. The sticker on the font says, “2x150W power to deliver 2x60w of True Valve Power.” Now it might be as loud as my TC-50–I need to do some testing on that—but I really don’t think it’s as loud as my Invective 120 which it should be if that claim is accurate, right?

Personally, IDGAF if it's as loud as a 120 watt amp - I'm looking for the opposite! I was a tight, dry, punchy amp at home practice volumes. That's where this modeling stuff would be helpful. But, I also don't want to drop north of a thousand dollars on it.

That’s kinda the good thing about solid state. You can get (arguably) some better tones at very low volumes.

Also, the stereo aspect of this 260 is crazy. It really adds depth, especially so at lower volumes where you need a little extra something to enhance the sound since you don’t get that awesome punch in the gut from pure volume.

With all that said, I’m still evaluating how much I like it.

    To paraphrase The Usual Suspects...
